Editorial Review:

As the all-new racing experience from Codemasters Studios, creators of Colin McRae: DiRT™, Race Driver: GRID is all about the race. Every moment from the adrenalin rush at the start lights to the elation at the chequered flag – the tension, pressure, noise, and action.

Featuring only the most powerful race cars – current and classic, circuit and drift – players will compete to conquer the most prestigious official race tracks and championships and then go beyond to compete in challenging city-based competitions, through to road events and urban street races.

With races crammed with action and incident, high-impact moments will come at you thick and fast, one right after another: engine blows, tyre blow outs, tight overtaking, accidents, opponent cars flipping, spinning, collisions with other cars and trackside objects.

From humble beginnings, earning a few thousand dollars a season, build a feared and respected racing team with a multi-million dollar income and complete at dramatic race locations and dominate a multi-disciplined world of racing.

In Europe, race prestige Marques, including Aston Martin, Koenigsegg and Pagani, on the greatest official race circuits. Enter street competitions and race high-performance V8 muscle cars through iconic U.S. cities including San Francisco, Washington DC and Detroit. In the Far East, Japanese racing culture sets the tone where night races, including Drift racing, take drivers through neon illuminated cities and to outlying mountain roads.

As the antithesis of the box-ticking, plodding single-player race game, Race Driver: GRID delivers a diverse career mode in a persistent world of racing that provides each player with a unique experience as their team writes itself into racing folklore.

Summary: Terrible
Comment: This game is almost unplayable. Fantastic looks are let down by awful handling and gameplay. One to miss.

Summary: Dont be swayed by the graphics
Comment: A great looking game - with lots of racing options and a huge BUT - the combination of controls and the underlying game race sim are hugely frustrating. It's neither fully arcade or a more reallistic sim - and it suffers for falling between the 2 stools. I have had the game for a week - and really persevered with it - but I've now had enough and it's coming off my hard-drive.

The problem is the control when racing, it's extremely difficult to maintain control of the car - and the usual is the end up swaying from side to side crashing into either side of the barrier. To begin with I put it down to my driving style, and tried to correct it by balancing throttle/brake more (After all, flooring it when in a turn should spin you out in some of the cars on offer here) - but it's nowhere near as simple as that. There are options for setting the sensitivity of the steering (linear, dead zone, saturation etc) and sure - you can find a balance there, but I'm finding that I am permanently having to correct the steering to keep a straightish line - and on a lot of car/course combos I'm finding it near impossible. I just cannot race competatively on even the Basic setting.

Now - I'm no racing noob either - I have played the TOCA games and the likes of Rally Championship, as well as my all time favourite - GT Legends, I'm used to more accurate driving models, but I'm pulling my hair out with this game - I cannot find the right balance of playing technique / settings to get anything from it.

It seems others have had a great time with it - i have had only frustration.

Summary: Excellent Racing Game, but a little flawed.
Comment: This is an excellent racing game that sits neatly somewhere in between simulation (Gran Turismo) and arcade style racing (Ridge Racer-ish). I would highly recommend everyone who is interested in racing games to buy this. It has its flaws however, see below.

Top Points: Graphics & visuals are fantastic, ability to hire and fire teammates and run a two car team - including managing branding, sponsors etc. Flashback replays are fantastic, very good idea and visually the replays look amazing.

Bad Points: You have an option to buy second hand cars on ebay motors instead of brand new, however this is useless because you earn so much money on the races you are never strapped for cash, and the ebay cars are only a few grand cheaper so whats the point. Also, because you earn so much money its not very challenging to progress through the games. Another bad point is the difficulty levels - there's rookie, novice, expert, savage, extreme etc. However these would be better defined as Age 3+, 6+, 9+ and very challenging. The leap in difficulty between the two hardest settings goes from easy to very challenging. Why have so many difficulty levels and have them all around the same level and one miles ahead, would of been better more evened out and smaller steps in difficulty.

There sounds like a lot of bad points compared to good ones, but the latter far out way the bad points. Its and excellent game that you will want to play continuously for weeks.

4 Star - Must Buy if you are into racing.

Summary: Good game, just watch out for the pc specs!
Comment: Have just bought the pc version of this and I have to say I cannot play it. Have patched it up to 1.2 ( at the time of writing this ) and have found the stuttering during the menus and start make this unplayable.

I know, treat minimum spec quoted on the box with a pinch of salt, but I did expect it to be able to run.

Have an AMD 5200x2, 4 Gb ram, 512Mb 1950 pro and still it cannot run without errors, even on the LOWEST spec.

BUT, I have got it on XBOX 360 and I can say it plays a treat. As others have said here, if you are looking for the ultimate race experience then look elsewhere (buy a car, get your B class racing licence and get on the track! You will NEVER experience the thrills in front of a monitor, regardless of your steering wheel controller).

If like me you are looking for a game to enjoy playing without having to pull you hair out then this is as good as they get. Just play it and enjoy it!
