Pair a transponder key with a mk2 rev4/5 MR2

Post by eringobragh »

I've spent a few months (obviously not at the one time) researching the various bits of this - from the key blade, to the chip type, etc..I already had a spare purchased [overpriced IMO] from a local locksmith but wasn't happy with its clumsy look and found that the mk3 owners has successfully programmed keys themselves.

Before I go into all the boring bits, and all I've researched and found I'll post the quick fix to this...it works 100% with 99/00 mk2 sw20 MR2 Revision 5 but should work with the Rev4 (and possibly Rev 3's)

A perquisite is that you have the black master key for this, if you've only got the grey key it's a no go. :(

Here is the key pair programming instructions:
Turning the ignition to on does NOT TURNING OVER ENGINE unless stated below.

NOTE: Contrary to what Toyota states, the security LED on the dash didn't come on and there was no notification that the pairing was successful, just the new key now starts the car

Starting Conditions:
-Vehicle Unlocked
-All doors closed
-No key in igntion lock

Insert a programmed black master key (Current Key) into the ignition lock

Carry out the following within 15 seconds:
Turn the igntion on/off four times
Turn the igntion back to on (fifth time)

Carry out the following within 20 seconds:
Open & close the drivers door six times

Carry out the following within 10 seconds:
Remove the key (working one) from the Igntion lock

Carry out the following within 10 seconds:
Insert the key to be programmed into the ignition lock (NEW KEY)
Turn the Ignition lock on and leave for at least 80 seconds.

Remove the key from ignition lock.

Open and close drivers door to complete the process (IMPORTANT)
I Got the 4C Key (TOY41 Blade) for $10.50 Delivered from the below seller (http://www.ecutool.com) on aliepxress

There is 2 keys available from Toyota Directly:

Image

89785-17020 - TRANSPONDER KEY MASTER

89786-17020 - TRANSPONDER KEY SUB (Valet ???????)

Both are the same price but the sub im guessing doesnt open boot or has access to program further keys!

Cheers man, I cleaned up the post there and added a few more points.

I have a 51 page PDF from the Toyota workshop dedicated to the irengine immobiliser (troubleshooting, etc) I found on the net after much much searching.

I've uploaded this here:

....took this to the locksmithtoday (I paired it using an unchipped blank I had) - locksmith told me that the blades don't match and it was a few mm smaller, but told him to cut from the tip and not the shoulder - anyway it works 100% opens all locks, etc so the aliexpress is A1 - coincidentally he asked me was it a chinese key, I told him no, he said he cut one before and it wrecked the blades on the machine - anyway I can confirm the key doesn't break locksmiths machines either :th:

I meant to add this link as well:

Theres a Silca Clone available for £18.50 cut (13.50 uncut) that will also pair with the igntion, although this one doesn't have the Toyota Logo:

Will they really be able to clone from a photo? :O
I really need to get around to getting a spare.

Reckon so as long as you use any half decent digital camera on macro and not a mobile phone one (although Iphone 4s cameras decent)

The key code itself is in the drivers door somewhere - I will have a look when I'm fitting my autoup window kit - this car is taking up WAY too much of my time :laughing

Hi,
Well, some MORE light on this very dark corner of these cars! This is actually a clear spelling-out of ONE of the doomed-to-failure methods I tried of pairing an immobiliser fob to the car! Thinking about it, one of the keys I have is only a grey one, so won't unlock the b00t - but there's always the remote-catch, isn't there? I'll probably get one of these keys and do this anyway, as there's so little to lose from having a spare. Once again, I salute you, you'd put Lootenant Columbo to shame!

Cheers Keischi - I've 3 chipped keys and 1 unchipped at the moment...I think a forth chipped key might be overkill - at least I know its a piece of "censored" to do (still tempted to get another one anyway!) - funny thing is it actually cost more to get the key cut in the locksmith then it did to get the copy from china!
