Unusual engine choice
Hi guys.
I came across this unusual kit car using a mr2 roadster.
But why would you fit a shi!!y Volvo engine to it.
Maybe somebody can enlighten me.

I notice the price has dropped by 4.5k.

The T5 is far from the shi!!y engine you claim it to be. The turbo and engine management he has fitted is from the S70R/V70R. A friend of mine used to have a debadged stock example of the latter and it was proper sleeper. Used to surprise a lot of people.
It has a fair bit more power and torque than a stock Rev3 3S-GTE with the torque being delivered from a lower starting point over a wider band. All in a car which weight c1500lbs less than the Volvo it was originally fitted to.

Re: Unusual engine choice
Tony got to agree, other than the V6 the T5 would sound and go great in mine.
Maybe you should have it in your other then you would have T2 and T5 lol

Re: Unusual engine choice
I'm not sure what would be involved in such a swap though.
If I were to go V6 it would have to be a 2GR.
My piggy bank just doesn't have the funds for that.

Same core engine as used in the Focus RS which has 350hp.APDevelopments wrote: ↑18/08/17 21:56 But why would you fit a shi!!y Volvo engine to it.

Yeah it's an old core design but it's been put to good modern use many times.
This mr2 install version has remapped ecu, bigger injectors, different turbo. It's going to be a crazy engine!
Volvo may not be the coolest brand but they have built a gem of an engine, Ford use it a fair bit now as they used to own Volvo. Porsche co-developed the engine, which should speak volumes.
More bang than any gen 3sgte.
you have been educated, thanks for asking!

FTFY.
I can think of several MR2s which I doubt would have any difficulty keeping up.

Hi Guys.
I'm not a great lover of any Volvo.
I've test driven loads but can't find anything I like about them.
There like marmite is suppose.
Plus there not what I would call reliable from friends previous experiences.
there not exactly cheap to fix either.
That engine choice would have never been on my list in any kit car.
For me it's a defo no no that one.

indeed, stock 3sgte, missed a word.TonyleFrog wrote: ↑19/08/17 2:17FTFY.

APD,
Not saying Volvo are cool or that they build cars people want. However the engine is better than a 3sgte. some versions of it have 345hp from the factory. most powerful 3sgte from the factory was around 260.
Agreed it's an odd choice of engine for a Toyota build. There are many better engines than the 3sgte out there, just because we love the 3s doesn't mean it's the only thing ever built.

You're talking about the cars - we are talking about just the engine.APDevelopments wrote: ↑19/08/17 9:04 Hi Guys.

Hi guys.
I'm talking about the whole thing. Volvo cars, engine or any other Volvo part.
Marmite to me. Uuuuuuurrrrrrrcccccckkkkkk. LOL.
My mother in law had a Volvo. And yes it did fall apart.

One swallow does not a summer make.
We had two Volvos (both V40s) as the family barge over a period of 15 years.
First one from new* in 1996, p/ex for another s/h one (12 months old) in 2003.
Neither fell apart.
* Only my second ever brand new car: the other was way back in 1966.

Re: Unusual engine choice
Our original 850 went on for many years and got to nearly 200k, the v70 that replaced it did 300k before it got traded in for a jag. no issues really, though when you use them that much things need replacing at service time.
Mate has a t5 that he upped the boost on and it flew along waaay back in 2002, he still drives the same car today. He's done more like 400k in it now and at least 300k of that has been at high boost

Re: Unusual engine choice
in fact come to think of it, my brother had a 340 that was quite old as a first car. it never let him down and saved his bacon when someone rear ended him at 70mph in a 30 zone.
a few years later he had a 480 a few years later. the cam belt snapped one day, just put a new one on and carried on driving it for a couple more years. had amazing brakes that car.

Re: Unusual engine choice
We had a volvo 240DL which while not winning any performance championships was reliable and extraordinarily solid. And nowadays the 240/244 GL and the GLE are getting a mite more desirable as a shell - people are putting 2JZs in them.
Of the stock cars I quite like the V40 Polestars - they're good looking cars.
