Re: 2 GR or not 2 GR
I wouldn't swap out a 3S-GTE for a 2GR-FE.
That said, if I was starting from scratch now (rather than 14 years ago) I would go the n/a route.
3S-GE to 2GR-FE makes far more sense.
If it's good enough for Lotus to stick a 2GR in an Evora that will do for me.
Low end torque is much more relevant for a road car in the UK imo.

Re: 2 GR or not 2 GR
Imported, built November 1990, looks OK from the pics, if there's no hidden rust, could be a good base to build from

Re: 2 GR or not 2 GR
Previous owner had the sills done already. There is a small amount of rust coming through the paint just above the windscreen.
Also some moisture in the boot floor but nothing progressed beyond surface issues yet. Looks pretty good to be honest.
It runs and drives enough for me to move it around the drive for now and get some of the body issues sorted. Think i need a parts list!
I'll be finishing the garden and workshop before i get cracking on this in earnest.

Re: 2 GR or not 2 GR
So i've been looking into the emissions side of this to consider if I need a cat or not and the impact on the MOT test.
From what i can gather the only information I can see about it is from the DVLA.
Assuming that is correct, the following rules then apply:
And accompanying guidance regarding a visual check:
So am i reading this correctly that the emissions standards are a Non-Cat Test with limits-
CO: <= 3.5%
HC<= 1200ppm
And no visual inspection as it is not a "full catalyst emissions test"
Two questions:
1) Am i understanding the rules correctly as above?
2) Would a healthy 2GR-FE pass these emissions limits with no cats?
If it can then pass without cats then that's one less thing to worry about.

Now, this vehicle was first registered in 1990, so am i understanding this correctly? It will go off the vehicle emission standards instead of the engine standards?Vehicles fitted with a different engine
If a vehicle first used before 1 September 2002 is fitted with an engine that’s older than the vehicle, you must test it to the standards applicable for the engine. The vehicle presenter must have proof of the age of the engine.
If a vehicle first used on or after 1 September 2002 is fitted with a different engine, you must test it to the emissions standards for the age of the vehicle.
Assuming that is correct, the following rules then apply:
And the accompanying flow chart:For all petrol engined vehicles first used before 1 August 1992, all gas engined vehicles and vehicles other than passenger cars first used before 1 August 1994the test procedure consists of a metered check at the normal idle speed, the so-called `non-catalyst’ test.

Re: 2 GR or not 2 GR
1990 MR2 with 2GR = non cat test.
2GR will have no problem passing that.

Re: 2 GR or not 2 GR
Looks like you got some fun coming your way.
Reading through the first few posts I found myself thinking noooooo don't mess with the nice standard tubby, buy another car to swap out the engine on. Glad you came to the same conclusion
Hit me up if you need a cheap n/a gearbox.

Re: 2 GR or not 2 GR
This is excellent news. I'll get a build thread up once i get some more progress with it.
Thanks! i already sourced an LSD E153, shift cables, shifter and an NA gauge cluster. I'm also getting rev3 turbo front hubs+brakes so just need to find rears. I'll have a large parts shopping list once i start the project in earnest. I'll be sure to check out Trevsmr2 as well.abovetherim wrote: ↑20/06/20 18:31 Looks like you got some fun coming your way.

Re: 2 GR or not 2 GR
You putting a longer final drive and 5th gear in the E153? Well worth doing to make it more suited to the 2GR's torque curve. Much easier to do so with the box not in the car too...

Re: 2 GR or not 2 GR
Definitely something to consider. I'll be taking my time with this and putting some attention to detail into it before i rush to assemble and make it drivable.
I have no idea what's involved with the 5th gear mod as i've not really thought that far ahead yet. i'll take a look into it closer to the time.
Hopefully it doesn't end up being a project binky!

Depends on how far down the hole of "while I'm in there" you go I suppose!

Re: 2 GR or not 2 GR
You can put a longer 5th in an S54 or a taller FD into an E153. I don't think there's 5th gear mod for an E153. If you can find an E51 (i think that's the code, it's from a manual camry), then it has a 3.6Fd which is the best choice for the E153 & V6 combination
