How long does it take to get to Stornoway from Ullapool, or is that not even an option with the cars? Would be a cool day out though

It's certainly an option to take cars over to Lewis. Whether it a goer is another matter.
Bear in mind that it's not just a short hop to get there. The crossing alone takes 2hrs 30 minutes.
So rather more than just a 'day out'. :laughing We would have to stay overnight.
See - https://www.calmac.co.uk/stornoway-ulla ... -timetable
Furthermore, as CalMac have a monopoly on the route it's not cheap.
£117.40 for car + driver. Another £18.40 for those with a passenger.

On my September 2016 trip I was in the right place at just the right time.
My pic of the ferry MV Loch Seaforth departing Ullapool for Stornoway.

Capacity is 143 cars and 20 lorries so we should have no problem getting on.
That said, if we do decide to go for it, we would need make sure to avoid disappointment.
So booking upfront would need paying for as well as the usual deposit for accomodation.

I will very likely be making a second visit to the Highlands this year.
I have yet to visit the Outer Hebrides so it's something I am actively considering.

I would opt out of this if its part of the plan - this plus hotel takes the cost up.
Going to Norway as well in 2018 if it all comes together so got to take all costs into consideration.

The ferry, yes substantially, but I think you're overlooking the fact that the hotel wouldn't be extra (except for any price disparity with the Morefield motel) because we wouldn't be staying at the latter that night (just as we did with Skye this year).

However there is something else as well. The 'missing' night at the Morefield would lie in between our first and last nights there, which might be less attractive to Tony & Bev for our block booking rate with them.

Also, (I can't quite explain why not having ever been there), my gut feeling is telling me that Lewis and Harris is not really suited to a predominantly driving event. It's more of a relax and explore* type of place (many of the roads are 'there and back' rather than the usual HD 'big loop' format).

* Which is exactly what I will be doing if I do include it on my next visit to the Highlands.

This is just my take on it. Others may have a different PoV.

I'm taking the long view. :) - http://www.mr2oc.co.uk/forums/351/16593 ... lit=norway

Got some ideas for the out and return legs plus one while were in Ullapool. Will post them as Google Maps routes tomorrow evening.

I have to agree with Pete another 120 on top makes it too dear for me.
Also 2 hrs on a boat is not my idea of fun.
