Close Shave

Post by jimi »

I'd been finding a few odd drops of water under my car when I got home from work (after 3 weeks away) nothing major and didn't seem to be losing any water. I decided to investigate the other day and eventually found this

and the other end

I changed all my hose clips a few years ago for stainless ones, but missed these as the top ones are up under the lower suspension cross brace and the bottom ones are hidden by the undertrays.
The clips just fell off in my hand, here's what was left

and shiny new stainless clips fitted

I think the only reason the hoses stayed on is because they are short and curved, if one had come off when I was driving  would have dumped all the coolant in minutes. A very lucky escape :D
Mr T used a lot of those type clips on the MK1, unfortunately they are past their sell by date after 20 years :laughing

Good find Jimi, glad you spotted it before anything bad happened! Think I'll add 'checking all hose clips' to my to-do list after seeing that. :th:

If you can try and use the style with the raised thread rather than the thread cutouts, they don't chew the rubber pipe up when you tighten them.

Good spot though.

I know the ones you mean and I have some, unfortunately not in stainless  The ones I used are fine as long as you use the correct size and don't over-tighten them :th:

The top ones are a bit awkward to get to, I took the chance to change my cross-brace at the same time, once that was out the way they were easy to get to :D

Has anyone any idea what size the hoses are that feed the heater, I got 16mm hoses and they are a bit on the right side, in case of any confusion I mean the ones that jimi spotted and recited, our steel pipes are well rotted so for the time being we are just going to connect the heater with rubber hoses.
Thanks in advance Andy
