WS engine lid lifter kit mod

Post by PaulWoods »

A virtually free mod i'm giving to the community instead of marketing it as a kit.

I made the discovery that if you use two of these 120nm kitchen cabinet door rams....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321084059983? ... 1439.l2649

They fit perfectly onto the engine lid side panels and with a few simple drill holes they fit, work and look fantastic.

Total cost £4 :)

PS, ignore the 3.0ltr Vvti V6 cluttering up the shot, that you CAN order from me :)

I've just ordered 2 of these and don't forget to add the postage (extra £2.40) then I realised the pic above is a mk1?
In which case would these fit a mk2 turbo? If not mines for sale!

And they only had 3 left and I bought 2 so you may need mine lol

They should really, technically the Turbo lid is lighter being fibreglass.

I'd beg to differ, I reckon the Tubby lid is a couple of kgs heavier.

I cannot confirm about the AW11 but the turbo lid with rain tray is lighter than the N/A one. I'd have thought old school steel would be heavier than fibreglass.

When I prepared my race mk2 I bought a turbo engine lid thinking it's fibreglass so lighter, right?
Wrong, it's heavier. :crybaby:

I too think the turbo lid is heavier than the NA lid.

So the idea of the cabinet rams is that once you pull the lever to undo the engine cover, the cover will automatically lift? :confused1: If so I'm getting a pair of those today! :th:

No, you pull the lever to release the engine lid. Lift up the lid by hand as you would normally and then it stays up.

Ah ok, would getting stronger struts like 150nm do it? I just think that would be a smart addition if its possible to do

I have done this mod and no matter what strength rams you use, it wont rise automatically as when closed or just opened the strut is almost horizontal and therefore there is no vertical lift. It just needs lifting about four inches and then it will continue rising by itself.

Ah ok, in that case I'll get myself some 150nm and do it with them :) But it would still be awesome if someone could find a way to do it, might be something worth looking into for the future I guess :th:

I find the engine cover pops open an inch when you pull the lever but then you have to help it to start then keep your hand on it as it tends to try to fly towards the back window

The frunk is the same with twin struts
