Revving when braking and high tickover

Post by TigerTebb »

For those of you who haven't read my last thread I power washed my engine and had all kinds of trouble, I flooded my spark leads and dizzy. That's sorted now but when the engine is cold my tickover is around 2000-2500 rpm until it gets hot, and even then it doesn't sit quite as low as it should. Also whenever I brake it revs by about 200 rpm, can anyone give me a hint to what it is?

Check your hoses that go to your intake make sure you haven't split one or knocked one off.

Agree, it sounds ISCV related :th:

This might sound full retard but can you tell me where my intake is? I'm looking online as I don't have my handbook at this house and I can't find a picture of it's location :( I'm new to working on my own engine so I don't quite know where everything is yet

Look at the 3rd and 4th pics. Idle up VSV circled in red and the attached VAC pipes are what you are after :th:

I found it! I removed the intake filter pipe and found that the dust cap used to block the intake for my manual choke conversion was gone which was causing too much intake into the engine! Luckily I don't have to go anywhere today so I'm going to refit another dust cap with a bit of silicon to stick it more firmly in place :th: Thanks guys for the help :D

The revs are supposed to increase by approx 200rpm when you brake ;) the brake lights activate the "idle up" vsv which increases the idle speed.

Had the same on my Mk2 Auto with the vac lines to the intake once, I remember it idling quite high and it was the line to the ISCV or i assume your ICV idle up alternative on the MK1. Not clued up much on the MK1 but it seemed logical.

Look forward to seeing it at Santa Pod bud :th:

You're more clued up than you think then haha, and a lot more than me :laughing Yes I'm trying to get small things sorted on her so she's ready for a lot of looks haha :th: Sadly I won't have had the money to repair the wheel arches by then but I'm trying to sort as much as I can :) I'm looking forward to seeing your mk2 kiz!
