It's not the starter as it's cranking over fine, just not firing.

I've convinced myself (thanks to Pete) that it's fuel pressure, so I'll take a look into that and report back.

Where's the best place to block off the return line as per Pete's suggestion?

Ok, so I took off the fuel rail and injectors, cleaned it all off (they were pretty grimey) and pulled the fuel line off the bottom of the filter to drain the fuel.

I reset the timing (4th check!) and then put it all back together. I shorted the pump in the diagnosis port to prime the rail.

A few cranks and it fired right up! I have no idea how I fixed it, which is annoying as now every time I get in it I'll expect it not to start.

I took it for a spin and had a bit of a fuel leak from the injectors - probably because I reused the old seals - so got a full set of these (3 per injector) on order.

Thanks to everyone who helped!

It's a about a year. The fuel that came out of it was a bit coloured (orangy) so I've got a new one on order too.

As the car sat for a few years before being used this year, it probably accumulated some rust in the tank that's now been pulled through the filter... I would be surprised if this had stopped it running completely though, maybe just run a bit rough. Hopefully that's all it was!
