Billowing white smoke

Post by ayresyboy »

Thought I'd start a thread on this to keep me going in the right direction and it might help others too.

Bought my silver Mk1 recently from a fellow club member. It was rebuilt by another club member before who I bought it from, between 2007 and 2010, and then garaged ever since.

Image

List of jobs carried out by the owner before last that did the rebuild and the previous owner who continued adding mods:

- full body repairs including new arches and lower panels
- full respray in original silver
- new decals
- refurbished front light mechanisms
- brand new crystal headlights
- brand new side clear repeaters
- brand new front bumper bar
- the underside including all arches floor plans painted in silver and waxoyled
- 4 inch JBL speakers
- new bottom ball joints
- new torsion bars all round
- new brake pads
- drilled and grooved vented front discs
- all callipers rebuilt with new seals
- stainless brake hoses
- new clutch master cylinder / slave cylinder
- new clutch and pressure plate fitted
- new head gasket
- cam seal
- cam cover seal
- valve stem oil seals
- new cam belt
- new tensioner
- new alternator
- K&N filter
- Stainless exhaust down pipe and back box
- new dizzy cap
- new plugs
- new rotor arm
- red silicone vacuum hoses
- new alloy wheels with Kuhmo sport tyres
- mk2 rear anti roll bar
- new poly bush suspension
- short shift gear stick
- front air dam
- custom coilovers using mx5 kit and uk made springs
- small momo steering wheel
- air horns
- USA style rear lights and side repeaters

It is SORN but was advertised as not needing a lot for MOT.

I garaged it for a bit as I had a few hols to go on. But the time came to get her MOT'd so I could start enjoying her.

Uh oh, billowing white smoke from the exhaust and lack of power. :(

Patrick (headcase) very kindly came to listen to it.

Verdict....head gasket gone.

So yesterday from this

Yes it would be cheaper and easier to buy a whole new engine but where is the fun in that ;)

So now hopefully the knowledgeable chaps will chime in with what I've got to investigate/carry out next as I have no experience of this.

Surely not. Would be a bit like getting a new car because the ash tray is full.

Looks a very nice car.

I can get a 4age for next to nothing so would be easier to swop it.

They are prone to going at #4 cylinder, but I can't see any obvious signs in the picture

Yeah I only had a quick look yest but couldn't see anything untoward. Will have to whip it off and get a better pic and see if there are any cracks on the block
