Engine won't start help please

Post by F304 JTM »

Hi everyone, I'm new to mr2oc and I'm after your help and worldly wisdom.

I picked up a mk1 a few weeks back that had been left in a barn for 12 years. The previous owners snapped a spark plug in the head and just left it.

So I took the project since then I've done the following to the car.

Fuel pump change
Fuel tank change
Spark plugs
Fuel filter
Injectors
Dizzy cap and rotor arm.

My little mk1 still doesn't want to fire up and idle for more than 2 secs.

The car will start if I use easy start spray or trick the cold start injector into letting juice out.

Otherwise the engine catches and dies almost immediately.

The spark is strong and the plugs are wet, I've thought it must be a fuelling issue.

But with the car running well when bypassing the injectors and their now replaced I'm stumped on what it could be.

Thanks for any help you can give me

I haven't checked the timing yet although I need to.

Error codes came back 1 flash, everything fine and dandy.

Just checked the fuel pressure valve on the rail and it's jammed shut could this be the cause?

Ace cheers al!

I'll check the vac hoses over too, if I forced the valve open should it run? to make sure this is the fault?

Hi all, ok I've checked the vac hoses as well as I can with the engine not running, I've tried a different ignition coil fitted another fuel return valve and I'm still having the same issues starts picks up to about 1500 rpm, then over 3 seconds drops and dies, a friend of mine is going to let me try a replacement ecu and starter relay.

Any other suggestions?

Car still reads no faults and I haven't checked the timing yet though the belt looks good and solid.

Try linking B+ and FP at the Check connector, (this will run the fuel pump continuously so only do it for testing) and see if it will start and run. If it does then you could be looking for a problem with the C.O.R (Circuit Opening Relay) circuit

Thanks Jimi made the bridge still have the issue, however today it ran for 10 secs and even when i was gentle on the revs built up to around 4k before it died.

However after a few more tests I need to ask all you kind folks another question.

Testing my injectors while they're all unplugged shows one constant positive and a pulsing negative all good right?

However if I plug 1 injector in from the bank of 2 both sides read positive with no pulsing at all.

So my question is have I got a short somewhere or is this normal?

Thanks again everyone for all your suggestions it's really appreciated

Ok well more trying of different things again and the injectors work, however the car still won't run, so I disconnected the hose on the map sensor hey presto she idles fine with a little encouragement to start.

While she's running if you either try to reconnect the hose or rev the engine hard she dies.
