Running problems.

Post by sirRhodes »

Hi guys.
I still havent been able to get my mr2 running, basically it has a very rough idle and when it struggles to rev from idle however it then revs ok once it is in the higher revs, although there is some weird scraping/knocking noises as it starts to rev up, there is also a strange beeping noise when idling stops after a while, also when you put the throttle straight to full throttle nothing really changes, sometimes it misfires once but then after that it still idles like before but if you slowly turn the throttle it starts to rev up slightly.
We think the problem is a sensor of sorts, mainly the do with the air/fuel mixture, we unplugged a few things and the engine did not change even when revving, I think one of them was the throttle position sensor (it was the sensor on the opposite side of the throttle bode to where the throttle linkages are.
Anybody have a similar problem or knows how to fix it?

A chirp could be a vac leak or loose spark plug. I'd start with these.

Need more info on your car though, revision, turbo or non etc. Also more detail on how it runs at WOT. Basically, the more detail on the how the engine runs the better :)

well its the mk1b non supercharged so its just a N/A 1.6.

I have basically done a major service on the engine (nearly everything other than cambelt) which made it run better but still not right.
With the throttle it sort of gets a bit louder but the revs don't really climb from idle that way.
I will get a few videos of it running and what it does soon.

Also I forgot to put this in but only from a small amount of revving and idling, about a minuite, the engine and coolant had got extremely hot, although it was standing still so no air flowing through the radiator but does anyone else have this problem?

just went out and gave it a good go ;) got a few videos
Unfortunately I did not have the original problems this time, though there was a few basically in one video I tried doing the throttle to full straight away, it revved slightly but still not as much as a car should, I then got it revving fully but then I went to put my phone by the exhaust instead but then it didn't rev past about 2000 rpm for some reason

Here is a link to the video

Unfortunately it doesn't pick up on any other noises, although it wan't making many of them so they must happen when its warm which is strange?

Oo er, doesn't sound great. Sounds like it could be running on 2 cylinders, timing could be way out too.

When was car last running properly ?
Did problems arise after you serviced engine ?
What did you do to service engine ?

Hi, I don't think its quite as bad as running on 2 cylinders as though it sounds rough it is consistent if that makes sense, so if it was on 2 cylinders it would be like *du du ...... du du* I'm not an impressionist but hopefully that makes sense.

I bought it as a none runner, no the engine ran much better after I did the service.
Spark plugs, HT leads, Rotor cap and arm, oil and oil filter and fuel filter, I wanted to do the air filter but the boot will not unlock!

If the timing is correct and compression is good then it's very likely a fuel or electrical problem. You need to make a list of things you have changed and that you know for certain are good. You could do that on here, would help us to help you more easily :)

Yeah my current thought is electrical as it doesn't have consistent problems, most likely a sensor, fuel is definitely another possibility but I had taken the fuel rail off and there was plenty of fuel in there and I can hear the fuel pump priming when the ignition is switched on so maybe injectors or a fuel regulatory problem??

I haven't got around to checking the compression yet and I can only presume the timing is correct (unsure how to check that)

Here is a list of things that i changed; Oil, oil filter, fuel filter, added some injector cleaner to the fuel (see if it helps), coil pack, ignition control module, battery, alternator, spark plugs, ht leads rotor cap and rotor arm

So yeah me and my friends main idea is fuel/air mixture, maybe a sensor that should adjust that is broken??

Bring it to me and i'll fix it for free in under an hour (assuming your compressions are fine).

Hate seeing people struggle with issues i know i can fix in minutes.

oh wow that's awesome Paul, thanks!
The only problem is it says on your profile that you are based in durham, that is about 3 hours away from me and since it is a project it has no tax or mot so I will struggle to get it to you
