Timing marks...

Post by Pob »

Hi all,

I'm in the process of changing the cambelt, both cams are fine, marked the bottom before removed the old belt and I carnt get the new belt on, so something must be slightly out. Checked the belt with he old one and it's fine. I carnt see any notches, dots on the crank sprocket... it hasn't moved from the marks I made but something isn't right as the belt isnt going on.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dan

Click on this link to get a pdf of the Mk1 workshop manual, and it will tell you how to change the timing belt.

Thanks for the PDF link, very handy. It just states use the notch in the crank sprocket... mine aint got on. I think I've sorted it, it's a non interference engine isn't it? I'm not going to know if it's right until I get a few other bits sorted on it.

Thanks for your help,
Dan

Thanks for the reply.

I will have another look tonight, but I'm pretty sure there was no notch

According to the image in the link below, it should be the 3rd tooth including the one next to the woodruff key

Thanks,

Yes, I would say it was that tooth also.

I have just enlarged your photo, and the black area I have highlighted seems to have a mark on it, which would correspond with the same tooth on cog.

I rechecked it tonight, and it's on the third tooth from the woodruff key. There is defiantly no notch on it, no dip nothing... I think the guy in charge of notching sprockets could be "censored" on that one.

I haven't tried it yet, fitting an alternator took longer than anticipated.

I'll report back

When you point it out you can see it, still not a very good mark.
