Potential coil pack death.

Post by Cytokine »

89 MK1.
I was driving and suddenly lost power yesterday, just managing to get on to the hard shoulder, and with a nice big backfire it dies.

Dizzy and rotor arm are new.
Haven't been able to remove plugs to inspect them. But I don't suspect them.
HT leads are new enough.
No disconnected or split hoses that I could see or feel.

On key turn, the engine turns over, it backfires so there is fuel, but does not start.

Is it likely to be the coil pack?

I have only had it back on the road for a couple of weeks, and was just starting to enjoy it.

Finally had the opportunity to check, and there are no fault codes.
So anyone with ideas is welcome to pipe up.

It backfires when I try to start it, so I thought that would mean fuel was being pumped.

Try starting it a few times, then take a plug out, if it's dry then probable fuel problem, if it's wet possible electrical problem. While the plug is out check for a spark.

exactly same on mine, backfired then started and got me home.
Then only backfired on start up and ran for few seconds before dying.
Then only started to backfire on turn over stopped running.
Finally got it to start by clamping return hose, then called rogue to pick it up. better for them with ramps to change pump lol.
cant say yours is the same but worth checking fuel pressure not fuel flowing

I have replaced the fuel pump now.
However the problem is exactly the same.

I am really struggling now.

Oil pump?
Oil pressure?
Its just a big joke to "censored" me off?

Have you checked plugs and leads yet? Definitely check plugs, should've been the first thing you did before changing anything.... those 4 little gems can tell you a lot about whats going wrong by what state they are in!

Coil pack may well be dying, tbh would've been a cheaper fix than fuel pump..... can check the spark from your leads on the intake manifold to see if they arc while someone turns the engine over, should be a nice strong spark from each one although don't get shocked, wear gloves, seriously that "censored" hurts!!

Worth checking air filter although really it would have to be super clogged up to choke your engine. (could try running briefly with the air intake disconnected, just make sure you don't suck any crap into the engine)

Could also check your injectors? disconnect king lead from coil pack, pull injectors individually and put them in a glass or plastic cup or bottle to check the spray pattern while someone turns the engine over.

Timing may have slipped out, unlikely but it has been known to happen.

doubt it would be anything to do with oil pressure, you would get a couple of warning lights telling you about that and it wouldn't cause the problem your getting
There is no "it cant be done" only "I cant do it!"

Cheers for that.
After I calmed down a bit I have been thinking its likely injector related.
Everything else is new or works well.
I have never done anything with injectors before so this will be all new.
