Potential coil pack death.

Post by Cytokine » 15/03/20 13:29

89 MK1.
I was driving and suddenly lost power yesterday, just managing to get on to the hard shoulder, and with a nice big backfire it dies.

Dizzy and rotor arm are new.
Haven't been able to remove plugs to inspect them. But I don't suspect them.
HT leads are new enough.
No disconnected or split hoses that I could see or feel.

On key turn, the engine turns over, it backfires so there is fuel, but does not start.

Is it likely to be the coil pack?

I have only had it back on the road for a couple of weeks, and was just starting to enjoy it.

Finally had the opportunity to check, and there are no fault codes.
So anyone with ideas is welcome to pipe up.

It backfires when I try to start it, so I thought that would mean fuel was being pumped.

Try starting it a few times, then take a plug out, if it's dry then probable fuel problem, if it's wet possible electrical problem. While the plug is out check for a spark.

exactly same on mine, backfired then started and got me home.
Then only backfired on start up and ran for few seconds before dying.
Then only started to backfire on turn over stopped running.
Finally got it to start by clamping return hose, then called rogue to pick it up. better for them with ramps to change pump lol.
cant say yours is the same but worth checking fuel pressure not fuel flowing
