Turbocharging Mk1 MR2

Post by SilverSurferMR2 »

Need advice on turbocharging a mk1 MR2. Can a standard engine take on a light turbo (200SX type turbo). What would need to be replaced? Where's the best place to put the intercooler. Which used intercooler will fit? Can a budget of 1.5K be enough if the mechanic know what he is doing. Does the fuel pump need to be changed?

Anybody around Essex has experience to help me?

There is talk of a turbo'd mk1 over on IMOC and the Twobrutal boys might well be worth a shout.

Its not easy though, the mechanical side of it is pretty straight forward, but the electronics are the complicated bit. The easy way is to tear the standard engine management out and go stand alone.
The standard setup can't read positive pressure you see, so its worse than useless for your application.

Not sure the standard block would be strong enough, you could use a mix of 4age internals and 4agze internals to create a block strong enough tho.

Pop over to twobrutal and give AlunJ a shout. He's done a bit of work looking into boosted 4A's so might be able to help ya out a little better

Rather than work on a block that needs to be worked on to accomodate a turbo, in the long run for better gains (as this is what you want intially), see above

people turbo 20v 4ages all day long so i don't see how it could be that tricky. a few of the ae86 guys on driftworks run turbos so maybe pop along there too. im sure twobrutal are the daddys though but you may get a bit "just 1.5 it!" bias

Na there is no bias. If someone has an idea they want to try it will be encoraged. Ok people may take the "censored" but its all in the name of light hearted fun.

Just go read Johnny and Marksmans threads, they are constantly going on at each other but we're all mates that get on great :)

Turbocharging Mk1 MR2

Has anyone seen performance car mag? there was a pug 205 gti on there and the turbo is fitted were the back box used to be fitted (MAD!) and he has the induction atthe rear and the air outa the turbo running via a pipe inside the car. IT SOUND CRAZY BUT WORKS WELL
He did not need a intercooler because the air was cool by the time it hit the engine and he runs standard compression etc. I think he just remapped the ECU. Take a look in the mag or look for it on the net.

Anything is possible if u spend the time thinking about it lol

the easy way to do this is to get new ecu and custom make a manifold for the 4agze engine,

soz olly i have seen your car and there is no way i could aford to do the convertion lol, yes you can plum in a stock 3sgte rev3 lum and 245bhp and have reliability all the way, but olly where is the fun in that unless we go mad like some have with big arches lol, missed you at the last few shows by the way. hope all is ok.
