But the “specialist” told me that he couldn’t set it up as it was raining. Then the following day he claimed it was broken and didn’t work at all. However the display seemed to show the rise and fall in boost, it held 13 psi (when the car was running that is) but apparently the solenoids are broken as they don’t make a clicking noise.

I’ve only ever had a couple of EBC’s and tbh have usually used an MBC ball and spring type. So I’m no expert on boost controllers obviously.

No clicking noises from the solenoids???
going a bit off topic here, but if it wasn't working then I would not expect to see 13psi with the stock actuator. To hit 13psi on a stock turbo and actuator, something must be controlling boost.

Exactly so.......

Gazza_DJ wrote: 18/07/18 14:31 I would say it has equal relevance - putting the wrong weight in could trash your bearings because the oil is either too thick or too thin for the clearances.
Fair enough, but the second figure is merely a parameter which defines the oil's VI at 100°C.
I don't think anyone has suggested using a /30 oil.
There is no point in using a 'thicker' oil than /40 if it's not needed.

What you use the car for is relevant too.
Regular red line thrashing round a track is a quite different scenario from normal road use.
I've always used an ester based fully synthetic /40 in T2. No bearing issues at all.
The crack in the stock piston gudgeon pin area was due to det, not a lubrication problem.

Ran Mobil 1 which was a 5W-50 for 10 years and no issues. These days I run Castrol Edge 10W-60. Never needed to open up the engine in 20 years.

For a stock engine or an older engine 10W is fine. Would run a 5W oil in a built engine but I notice even performance bikes these days run 10W-40 and 10W-50 is hard to get for them as they now have special oils due to the clutch.A 3SGTE doesn't even come close to a modern sports bike.

Bit of a waste of time asking for opinions on oil, your always going to get conflicting opinions.

Time and mileage is the only true real world test.

Both of those are decent quality fully synthetic oils, so no surprise there.
Even the very best doesn't last for ever though.
A proper maintenance schedule with changes as necessary is just as relevant.

You can say that of any subject under the sun.
What matters is whether they have any basis in fact or are just hot air/speculation.

Quite, but someone who doesn't have that experience has to rely on guidance from others.
Oil to an engine is like blood to human. The wrong transfusion has the potential to kill you.
An oil technologist is going to be a more reliable source than hype from a marketing guy in a sharp suit.

Does anyone know if it’s possiblw to get your engine oil tested to see what it actually is?

Why would you want to do that? If you're concerned about what you have just change it.

Because I have a reasons to doubt that the oil that was put in is actually what it’s claimed to be buddy.

Of course you can get oil tested. Submit a sample to a lab.
Whether the results will be useful to you/meet your expectations (whatever they may be) is something else.

Picked at random off the interweb

https://www.crownoilenvironmental.co.uk ... l-testing/
Unless the purpose is evidential (e.g. a compensation claim) I don't see the point of having it done.

I just have reason to doubt that the millers 5W 40 i paid of is likely to be some cheap crap.

I’d be amazed they could pinpoint exact oil. The weight and condition sure, but exact manufacturer is a push unless they have access to a sample of every oil known to man.

I’m not interested in what brand it is, just what type of oil it is that’s been put in.

Oh it’s coming out that’s for sure!

But I’m very interested to find out just what type of oil it is that’s in there.
