Can’t kill a mr2 turbo

Post by APDevelopments »

Well I’m finally beaten.
I’ve been trying to kill the engine on one of my mr2 turbos.
Basically just to blow it up mechanically.
Why. A V6 is going in soon. So why not.
I have a standard rev 1 turbo engine but with a modified ecu. It does have improved cooling with a massive oil cooler and a large aftermarket intercooler. It red lines between 9-10k which is rather high. So somethings been tweeked. No joke. The rev needle goes all the way around. Mr other mr2 turbo stops at 7k.
Other than that it’s standared as far as I know. It uses top castrol 10-60 edge oil.
I’ve physically welded the waste gate shut, thrown out the actuator. Chucked out the dump valve so the turbo is straight piped in.
I have been driving it quite hard for a few weeks now and it still drives perfectly.
I have no idea what boost it’s running with the waste gate welded shut. But it absolutely flies.
Any ideas on what the bhp would be like this? Must be in the 300’s surely?
The only thing now is the clutch is starting to slip whilst under full boost. So this is a weekness and the first to give in.
I would have thought something would have blown by now. But nope!
I’ve done the same thing to other cars over the years like Vauxhall’s vxr’s ford st’s Renault rs etc and they all went pop.
But not a mr2 turbo. Just been doing some checks today and compressions, everything is perfect.
This really says something about these engines. There tough as old boots.
Only worry now is after driving it around like this for 2 weeks I’m going to find the V6 Camry engine rather slow.

Why would you do that to a perfectly good engine that someone else could benefit from?
It's good to be home

I would say that someone who knew what they were doing modified it. You generally cannot get enough fuel into the engine with a modified turbo so it must still be running the stock CT26 or it would go pop. Basically the boost on these drops to below 10psi at the redline with the wastegate still closed anyway, the turbo compressor wheel is too small.

The V6 is not going to be an upgrade for you. If you told me you had the 3SGE I would have said its an upgrade but a V6 is not an upgrade for a turbo, not even a decent stock one let alone a modified one.

Its not making 300Hp unless its got an upgraded turbo. Thats what "only" 250Hp feels like from a Rev 1 3SGTE.

Bit of a silly idea trying to blow up a good engine, why bother going V6 ? or else at least you would sell the 3SGTE engine to offset the cost of the V6 ? Then again I think a V6 in the MR2 is a stupid idea.If the MR2 only came out in a N/A version I would say sure, why not but the Turbo can be built to spank the V6 without trying hard.

I'll bet he's never driven one with a 2GR-FE* under the lid.
That's the way I would go if I was starting again from scratch.

* Supercharge it (à la Evora S) and it would leave the MR2 turbo wondering which way it went.
If you're not living life on the edge, you're taking up too much room!

Hi Guys.
Nobody wants this engine. Trust me. I’ve been caning the a rse out of it for 2 years now. It’s done a few track days, over heated twice during the summer. And it’s on its second turbo. It’s milage is unknown and there is no history on it before I brought the car.
Yes it has a standard ct26. The first original turbo spat its impleller out the exhaust because of over speed.
It’s a very loose engine and does rattle alittle at certain revs.
My reason for changing to a V6 is reliability and sound. It’s going in my Lambo kit car.
Paul woods at woodsport swears by them and thinks it will be wonders in her.
I guess a dyno will tell all. So I might book one in the next few weeks just to see.

The engine in the flesh. Looks very nice but it’s very tired now.

Looks to me like someone spent quite a bit of money on that engine.

Hi Guys.
Everything in the photo is just cosmetic and for show.
Looks the boll ocks but it’s all just for show.
The engine is pretty much standard under all the bling.

I was complementing the MR2 turbo engine on how tough it is.
It’s put up with my right foot for 2 years and it’s still good.

Unlike other cars I’ve owned. Ie Vauxhall’s Cora’s vxr turbo engine might as well be made of butter. Wasn’t long before that went bang.

How would you know unless you pulled the engine and stripped it down ?

Pretty hard to tell if its had any engine work from looking at the outside.

Thats still pretty expensive "Cosmetic" work if you ask me.
