Boot not opening

Post by Jason20 »

I need help breaking into my boot (with as little damage as possible)

I put the key in to open the boot and turned it, however, the lid won’t open. The lock is now stuck in the unlocked position too, and the lever inside the car has no effect.

Does anyone know a way to get in without damaging too much.

Thanks

Firstly, you are not trying with the valet key are you? This will not open it or the glove box lock.
Secondly, spray some WD40 through the straw into the boot lock and wiggle the ignition key back & forwards. Remember that to unlock the boot you turn the key to the right.
With patience it should unlock I think.

I only have the one key for the car. I’ll try wd40 but it seems as though it’s unlocked and something it’s jammed, stopping it opening

Valet key can open the boot and the glovebox unless they're put in valet mode. For the boot, the slot is normally vertical when locked - you can turn it anti-clockwise 90º to put it into valet mode which then prevents the valet key unlocking it or the interior lever working. the boot is opened by a clockwise turn about 45º.

I can’t remeber which way the key turned but I’m pretty sure it was 90 degrees anti clockwise, therefore meaning that it’s in valet mode. If so how do I get it out of valet mode?

I had the same problem with one of my cars.
Had a bit of brain fade and put it into valet mode by mistake.
When I tried turning it clockwise again it wouldn't budge.
The solution which worked for me was a lot of jiggling of the key.
At the same time put some light pressure on it to push it firmly into the lock barrel.
Then do the opposite. i.e. withdrawing it. Only very slightly though.
Rinse and repeat.

My conclusion is that this can happen if the valet mode is seldom used.
It is exacerbated if the ignition key is worn from many years use.
Once the key is out again give the lock the WD40 treatment.
Reinsert key and turn it to/from valet made several times.
Should be fine after that.
