3SGTE Engine

Post by jacktempleman »

I'm Currently running a 3SGTE ST205 in my 1994 rev 3 Turbo. I would like to rebuild an engine but unsure what is the best engine to use ST215 or ST246. I would like to rebuild one with forged internals to run about 400BHP but spec'd higher to keep it reliable. I have heard the ST215 has the best intake manifold and also you get coil on plug compared to distributor on my engine. Is there anything else I should consider I would use a stand alone ECU so the ECU that comes with engine wouldn't matter. Does anyone have anymore info on the differences between the engines. I found a link on Wikipedia which was quite good.

At 400bhp you won't be on stock management anyway, so you could run an aftermarket COP system on your current engine. Also for a ~400bhp target, you won't be using a stock or hybrid CT turbo realistically so differences with the turbo between engine generations don't really matter either.

As you already have what I assume is a good working Gen3 3SGTE, I would just build that. For that ~400bhp target you don't *need* aftermarket rods, just pistons. COP is nice, but not essential. If you really want it there are kits to use 1ZZ coils like this - http://racerxfabrication.com/mr2-celica ... il-on-plug - many people have come up with their own solution as well.

I believe the Gen4 intake manifold does fit on the Gen3 head if you wanted to do that (you'd need to check that), and there are a few aftermarket options for the intake manifold as well. Certainly not strictly required for your 400bhp target though.

The OP might find this of interest.

The CT15b used in the Gen4 3S-GTE is good for 400bhp.
The ST215 Caldina engine isn't exactly plentiful over here.

I'm not going to read through 24 pages to find a dyno sheet and searching the topic didn't bring it up... Where are you seeing 400bhp?

The only thing I could find is this, but thats referring to the 1JZGTE:

"The CT15b Turbo is one of Toyota’s well engineered blow dryers capable of providing 400hp, It was designed purely for 1jzgte to eliminate the twin turbo setup without losing response or power but it also improved the maximum torque by about 4% and is 25% more efficient than ct12 setups."

I am pretty sure that you won't get to 400bhp on a stock 3SGTE CT15 variant.

I can point you in the direction of the 3S-GTE Engine Repair manual if that's useful?

If Wikipedia is right, then the 4th gen of the 3S-GTE came out in the 2nd gen Caldina (ST215), which was replaced by the ST246 in Sep 2002.

Follow Jimi's link - PoohBears post (post number 2) is the repair manual (RM164E) for the 3S-GTE from March 2002 which makes it suitable for the ST215...
