What to do?

Post by dinono10 »

:confused1:

As some of you may know. I own a Mark 2 MR2 and a mark 3 MR2, both in red. I currently Drive the Mark 3 and have owned it for a year now.

The mark 2 MR2 is currently at my parent's garage. It won't even start unless I jump start it using my other car. It is very rusty with a tiny hole on the bottom of the driver's side door along with a typical rust on the wheel arches and below the passenger side door it is also very bad.

Has it seems at the moment, it doesn't seem like it is mechanically in great shape either but that might be because it hasn't been used for a year now.

There is nothing wrong with my Mark 3 it is in excellent condition fairly low mileage for a 2004 model.

I've had the urge recently to buy another MR2 mark 2 however for my kind of budget there aren't many tidy examples which is understandable. Which leads me to thinking I could repair mine or at least get it back on the road and drive it. But at the same time I know the rough is really really bad and could cost me way too much money to repair. I wanted to ask you all what you would do in this situation? The most I would be willing to pay for an MR2 it's maybe £3,000 and trade in my MR2 towards it. I could easily save up for 6 months and get a better model in the future but wanted some opinions on what I should do with my mark 2 MR2.

It depends on how centimental the car is to you, these cars aren't economic to fix from a value point of view as it stands. That said buying another one which is just as old will come with its own problems and costs.

I'd look into the costs to put it right and then weigh up the options and what you want to do. I had to do the same thing at the start of this year when my head gasket went. For what its worth I decided to fox mine but its certainly not been a cheap excercise and I wont see that money again....

Its very sentimental, I've owned it since 2011. I'm a secondary school teacher and everyone kind of knows me and my car. I love the attention I get from it and as you all know there aren't many on the road.

I'm thinking it will cost a lot. It has done 153,000 miles. Rusty wheel arches, hole in the door about 4 cms in width. Bubbly areas of rust in places too. It would be foolish to try and fix it all up.

How about buying an mr2 for around £2500. There are some cheap models on ebay, however I'm assuming they are ropey and also I a bad condition. I have been checking the MOTs online for these cars. Guessing it not recommended

Price up the repairs vs buying another cleaner car and see where you get to. Just be aware that you're moving from a known quantity in terms of issues and problems to a potential unknown with a new car to you.

You'd have to look around and see what your money can get you to make a more informed decision. I must admit I've been out of the market for a long time so really couldn't give good advice in that respect...

Someone like Patrick (headcase) would be a good bet for pricing up repairs if you need help in the SE.

I used to teach at the secondary school in Newhaven, I know Newhaven very well. You may have seen me driving around in my red mr2 it was quite well known.

To be honest, I don't know how much it would cost. Mine is faded and has been for years. Not sure where you could go.

I've spoken to Patrick, plus sent him pictures.
He doesn't think it's all bad. I sent him the worse pictures. Needing new sills /welding and some painting. All in for a grand or there abouts...

I now need to decide what I want to do. My mr2 mk3 has had a new mot/full service/new tryes recently.

Really not sure. I know my mark 2 would need some new suspension parts. Also there's the issue of getting it started and over there. I live in Peacehaven so it's less than an hour away.

My other option is to save some Money up (I'm a secondary school teacher plus have 2 other jobs so wouldn't take long) and buy a lower mileage mr2 with no rust from a garage. Thoughts please guys?

I have to agree...

The MK2 is lifting in value now so at a grand to get everything done bodywork wise, that is a great place to start and you have a car which is known to you.

The other bits are spanner work, far simpler than trying to get the bodywork sorted.

The car obviously means a lot to you, I think a lot of people here would agree that if you have had one "special" car to you, getting another isn't quite the same.

So, my 2p? Fix her up :th:
