LSD GEARBOX

Post by Jason20 »

Hi, I was wondering if any UK spec MR2’s came with an LSD and if so how would I be able to tell.

Thanks in advance.

jack up both back wheels and turn one by hand . the other side should go the same direction.

Does that work on MR2 LSD? Perhaps yours is in better shape than mine. Doesn't work on a lot of viscous LSD's as they need a fair bit of speed difference between the wheels to 'lock up'.

There's no easy way to tell with the driveshafts in other than the driving behaviour. If the driveshafts are removed you can look in the hole and on the non LSD's you can look right out the other side of the 'box while the LSD has a bar blocking your view.

I’ll have to try the jacking it up method, thanks.

In a word.... no.

Only turbo's and the last N/a with the Beams (japan import only) had a LSD fitted as an option. You can fit one from a mk3 into the n/a manual gearbox but it's pretty extensive work. If it's been done I'd expect to see a record of it as it's not something your average spanner monkey would be able to do at home.
There is no "it cant be done" only "I cant do it!"

My Rev5 UK owners manual said it had one, but when I took the transmission off it was evident it did not, and the code on the frunk ID plate was a open differential code.

If an NA has a factory one, it'll be helical like the Mk3 one, not viscous like a Turbo.
