No Crank
Hi all,
I think I may have shorted my stater motor by accidently touching the top of the nut which connects the starter motor to the relay in the boot with the end of a screwdriver.
When I turn the key, all lights come on in the cabin and there are clicking sounds from the rear of the engine bay. The car doesn't begin to turn over as it should.
I am no electrical expert and was wondering what the best process of elimination would be? Testing procedures? Any help would be great.
Cheers

Re: No Crank, No Start - Help/Guidance
battery flat, does not hold in the solenoid, that's what you can usually hear clicking.SamJ123 wrote: ↑10/04/20 11:07 Hi all,

charge battery or get some jump leads
and try not to hijack another thread with another issue, better to explain yours

Split to its own thread. It's very poor netiquette to hijack someone else's thread, please refrain from doing it
Have you checked for a blown fuse associated with the starter circuit ?

Re: No Crank
Thanks Jimi, now I know it's frowned on I won't do it again.
I've checked the battery voltage and it's giving 7.9 volts. I've ordered a battery charger so will continue checking things on Wednesday when it arrives.
Checked all fuses and they seem to be okay. Are there any others related to the starter circuit not found in the engine bay fuse box?

Re: No Crank
If the battery is only at 7.5v then there's every chance it's had it, may not even recover with a proper charge. Certainly no where near enough voltage to crank the engine over.
Look in R/B No5 in (the front boot fusebox) there's a couple of fuses there that may be relevant, but you'll need to check the BGB to be sure

Re: No Crank
I charged the battery up over night and luckily the car started straight away. Managed to get the voltage up to 13.8v.
I suppose I somehow damaged the battery by shorting the starter motor. Looking at the circuit diagrams that doesn't make sense but it seems to have fixed the issue for now.
Thanks for the advice.

Re: No Crank
You may find that although it's charged and will start the car, it won't hold the charge for any length of time and will go flat in days rather than weeks. Hopefully not, glad you got it started.
