Handbrake / Rear Caliper issue
Hi
My MR2 failed its MOT recently on the handbrake. For the last few years its never been amazing (often needed tightening up).
The garage I have looking at my car say one of the rear calipers is the cause of the issue.
I have already had both rear calipers replaced in the past few years.
Is it likely I need another caliper or is there something else wrong?
Also can the calipers be repaired / refurbed instead of replacing them every time as it gets expensive.
Thanks

The rear calipers are not that great and, the handbrake - even on it's best day not all that brilliant either.
Yes you can have the calipers refrubished - look to companies like Big Red who do a cracking service.

The other thing it may be is the cables. they're easy enough to check (jack up the car - remove rear wheels - disconnect handbrake cable from caliper - check movement is free)

Re: Handbrake / Rear Caliper issue
I got new cables and refurbished calipers from TCB parts
handbrake is now spot on
handbrake is now spot on
Not Plan B again!! Why don't we just go with plan B in the first place?

The cable never needs tightening when everything is working as it should.
Get new cables, the strands of the steel cable snap internally and snag the outer cable. There should be no resistance in the cable sliding and what happens is they cease up nearly solid so not only do they not enguage the calipers properly they do not RELEASE so your rear brakes are staying on.
Don't buy used cables, they are all long since stuffed now.
