Would this cause my fith gear to grind, it looks as if this should be tight not with sideways movement?

For some reason the rubber thats in the middle is all stuffed in the UK cars.

I have had various rubber bits on mine fail, like the front shock gaiters and the rear handbrake cable gaiters but the gear shifter rubber is still fine.

Would probably knock some up in Nolathane if they eventually go, its the ideal material..

Thanks Jimi, I’ve already checked it out, I think I have some bearings that might fit, job for tomorrow after finishing the wax oil.

Its not a regional issue, its common in North America as well.

Strange but I did put a bit of grease on mine a very long time ago. Perhaps the steel in the centre binds on the pin and stresses the rubber, then again the oil you use in the gearbox affects the force required on those rods to change gear so thats probably the main factor.

Still have all the original engine mounts and even the rear CV boots as well. Pretty sure the steering rack gaiters were replaced but a long time ago now.

I wax oiled the underside and under the arches yesterday and the rubber bellow? has all but collapsed on all the shockers. The rest was mint though, so I’m very happy about that.
I dug out some bearings I bought for my mountain bike rebuild, they look like they could work, I’ll post a reply if they do, with the bearing number.

I would not use the skateboard bearing type here like those ones on ebay. The originals allow it to rotate in all directions a little for a reason, well worth spending a bit more on the poly ones.

I changed the bush over yesterday with the bearing I had left over, which was a perfect fit, sadly it hasn’t made a blind bit of difference, it still grinds going into fifth.
So this other bush that can be rotated, is this likely to have any affect or am I looking at a fifth gear replacement?

The red bush was what I had removed, bearing I used pressed in with a little resistance.

The red bush looks like a replacement, pretty sure oem ones are black.
I think one of the posts I linked to shows where the square bush is that wears and can be rotated. The cables could also need adjusted, I think there's a setup procedure in the BGB.
Have you changed the gearbox oil ? Failing all these it may well be worn syncro rings as TLF mentioned.

If it is the 5th gear synchro, the good news is that it involves far less work than doing the others.
Just need to remove the gearbox end cap.
