Cannot unlock car

Post by Babytoy »

Hi
My wifes 1990 mk2 has been stood for about 6 years and now she cannot get into the car at all.
We have no knowledge about cars at all and need to get into car to see if it still starts.
Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

When you say you can't get into the car, what is happening ? is the door not unlocking with the key ? or are you just trying remote unlocking ?
The car battery is guaranteed to be flat after 6 years and you will almost certainly need to replace it.

Spray some WD40 into the locks and leave for a few hours, then spray again and insert the key and work it backwards/forwards (gently) to see if it loosens up and unlocks the door.
Where are you ? there may be a knowledgeable member close to you who would be willing to assist.

I had the same problem with mine, give it a good go with WD40 as Jimi suggests will break down the old lube and whatever is making it stuck. Sprayed some graphite in there and now it's smooth.

Thanks for the reply but using wd40 has not made any difference.
Using the key I can turn it 90 degrees clockwise but only about 30 degrees anti-clockwise.
Do I need power in the battery to unlock door with key?
