3sge engine removal from top

Post by def_mr2 »

Only done on a rev 2 3sge NA so far. Pulling a rev 5 out soon so will update later on that.

It may scrape coming up, but if you prepare towels or something to protect the metal in advance you might be ok.

For those wondering if a mr2 engine can be removed from the top it can. Not a lot of work needs to be done.

Everyone says the gearbox needs to be removed, is wrong. All that needs removing is the exhaust headers. Then proceed to remove engine mounts and cables as you normally would. Remove the rear gearbox mount, gives more room and prevents a risk of scratching top inside of the engine bay.

Rear subframe does not need to be removed. Once all is disconnect, slowly lift the engine with an engine hoist. You need to tilt the timing belt side of the engine up, the higher you tilt the less of a chance you have of the gearbox scraping against the car. Keep an eye on all sides while lifting engine out of car. Once engine is out, you can move it out of the way.

2 people is not needed but definitely suggested as there is very little room each side.

Only follow if your confident enough. I do not take responsibility for you damaging your car. I made this post simply to say it can be done.

Wouldn't recommend installing engine via top. A lot of damage could be caused.

Update on rev 5 NA removal from top.

It is possible however it will damage the inside of the car.
If your pulling it from a car you don't care about go ahead and do it. Just be careful where the engine is while coming up, to ensure you don't damage anything.

REALLY DON'T RECOMMEND.

It may break some things on your engine. So please if your doing it, be careful and take it slowly.

Once again I do not take responsibility for any damage caused. I have clearly said I do not recommend, but I cannot control what you want to do.

It's been done before from the top, both on the MK2 and the MK1, same risks/problems as you have noted with both. Good to get it confirmed again and the info may be useful for someone, thanks for posting :th:
Generally it's easier to drop the engine on all MR2's, there's a couple of good articles in KY2 on engine removal from the bottom.

Much easier to lift the car off the engine with the crane.

The way I've seen it done is using the back bumper (inner) and a engine crane as mentioned

Yeah I have done that too using the impact bar. But if I’m not removing the rear bumper for some reason I just use the side engine and gearbox mounts

I've done the lifting from the rear towing eyes to drop the engine and thought it was better to remove the bumper to prevent damage but id rather not remove the bumper on the current car.
How are you guys doing it when lifting by the engine mounts? Taking the rubber mount off and putting the bolts back in to lift from?

IMO that would be the safest way, no rubber to possibly seperate :th:

Yeah remove the mounts then put the bolts back in. Stick a sling around them and your away.
