MK2 2.0 GT-i 16 (New Here)

Post by JamesKhan »

Hello,

I am new to this forum so please bare with me.

My father has recently passed down to me a Toyota MR2 MK2 2.0 GT-i 16

The car was purchased on the 02/10/96 , the same day as my birthday (I was brought home in it).

The car has done 80,000 miles and retains its original parts but is not without problems e.g. central locking system is broken, key fob doesn't work, alarm etc.

I know absolutely nothing about cars yet alone the MR2, however I'm really keen to fix and maintain the car as it clearly holds a lot of sentimental value.

If someone is out there who could point me in the right direction.

Thank you!

Regarding the central locking system, I've had a look at the forum but none seem to match up with my issue.

Events:
- Key fob and central locking all worked fine.
- Key fob replaced 3 times over the years.
- Using the button within the car, the passenger door would lock but not the drivers, required the key.
- within the last two years, passenger door also not locking when button pressed.

Current Situation:
- Fob works (yellow light flashes and their is the click but doors do not lock).
- Using button, car doors do not lock but can also hear the clicking noise.
- Both doors now require use of the key to lock from the outside.

Sounds very much like the solenoids or mechanism for the central locking are sticking, fairly common especially if not used much. You need to remove the door cards and lubricate all the locking mechanisms. If you function the locking with the cards off you'll be able to see which bits are moving and which aren't. A search of the forums should find similar problems and solutions. Here's a start for you LINKY

Same year and model as ours, looks like a T bar?

Mechanically these are well built and reliable cars. The key is the body and rust. If yours is genuinely rust free it is worth looking after and will probably increase in value

Huh, locking!!!
for as long as I've had mine (Mk2, Rev 2) it won't lock and arm the inbuilt security if I use the Driver's door, also it won't lock the passenger door.
If I walk round the car and lock using the passenger's door, it locks all the doors and arms the security. :yahoo:
So, I get a little bit of exercise and the car is nigh on 30 years old.

Sounds like mine, but the alarm was disconnected by a previous owner.

I will hopefully get around to getting the locking fixed.

I'm slowly improving her bit by bit.
