Apexi Power FC and Knock

Post by MR2T_Jake »

My Forged engine with some basic bolt ons (intercooler, decat, exhaust etc) has been tuned on the dyno with an Apexi Power FC which on the dyno made 240whp (lovely stuff)

No high knock levels detected on the dyno, but it seems that on the road in 3rd gear 5500-6500rpm i'm getting higher knock spikes of around 60-68 and triggering the EML light (knock warning) everything up to this point barley goes over 30-40 on knock.

I used my commander to remove 3 degrees across the entire ignition map and that rev range dropped to 30-40 degree of knock.

Would my best course of action be to remove 3 degrees in the cells around 5500-6500 high pressure?

Or am i worried about nothing and 60s on knock for a forged engine nothing to be too worried about. I am in the UK and barely any tuners use Det cans and i would have no clue what im doing if i was to make a set.

I experienced knock detection on my aftermarket EMS and to be safe allowed program to reduce timing by 3deg when detected. I also trimmed back timing a couple degrees in the 4500-6000 range above 15psi. This is the danger area for detonation. Another thing I did was add fuel to cyl 2 & 3 of approx 2-4% above 14psi.

Knock detection is difficult to achieve and most EMS systems do not do a good job of controlling. Most Tuners I’ve spoken with generally turn it off and install a conservative tune instead.

Hope this helps.
