I'm really hoping someone can help. I'm having trouble with my 2003 MR2 SMT. When I go to put it into gear from a neutral position the car stalls. I've had it run through diagnostics and it doesn't come up with any fault codes & the engine is running well. I've had no previous problems with it. Does anyone have any experience with this happening/answers?

I don't know to be honest mate, I would imagine around £250 ish to replace it but as for adjustment.......I believe the clutch pedal is adjustable but I wouldn't have a clue where to begin.

yeah finding that out fast, I've had a mechanic look at it and tell me its definately the clutch, so far being quoted £500 labour + parts. Toyota dealership quoted me £713.53 to supply & fit....
How can anyone tell it needs replacing without even contemplating any repair or adjustment worries me....

I have no idea about the diagnostic procedure specific to the transmission. All I know is that no fault codes actually came up when it was hooked up to the diagonistics.
unsure what to do next, don't really want to be paying for replacement parts if they're not need & it doesn't fix the problem!

Toyota have finally taken a look at it and can't find the problem but have said fault codes P0900 & P0919 show, although I had previous mechanic run it through diagnostics and it didn't register any fault readings?!
price has now gone up to £781.80 to replace the clutch, although apprently that "might not cure the problem" I really feel like i'm being taken for a ride now!
Toyota are rapidly going down hill in my estimations! Anybody know who complaints should be addressed to?!

I would also like to know where to send complaints, i have received exactly the same treatment with my local Toyota dealer. They quote thousands to replace stuff that doesnt need replacing, i had an O2 sensor issue and they quoted me over a grand to replace the ecu!!
I thought it was just my dealer but clearly they are taught this kind of rudeness at "Toyota HQ".
So yeah, an address for complaints would be nice :razz:

Toyota technicians are generally less experienced than say Peugeot, Renault, Vauxhall, Ford techs as Toyotas in the main are reliable cars. So Toyota techs change oil and filters all day long.
When a technical fault occurs, Toyota techs are at a loss as they have no skills and experience to draw upon where a Peugeot technician for example is an excellent diagnostic technician because there cars are so unreliable.
Does not help you right now but sending a complaint will get you nil results. Better off hunting around for a specialist. Main dealers are not the place to take an SMT fault.

Thats basically what the said to me when I spoke to the service dept...."they very rarely go wrong, so finding the fault is difficult" that was their response to me saying seems like you don't know much about the SMT!
I feel very untrusting towards them now! especially as the price seemly went up £68.27 from the original quote as they forgot to say extra 'fluids' were needed & two screws!!
Very dissapointed! I wish I could have marked all existing parts with invisible markers!!....

Ok, putting a Manual in an SMT is not possible, this was discovered when Rowland was going to turn his old SMT tubby into an n/A race car.
As for the SMT issue, have read a couple of articles on this in the states, but can't for the life of me find it, there was a simple fix and an expensive fix.
BEST bet is give these guys a call, leading MR2 specialist in the UK, and deal with MK3's a fair amount now.
Speak to Patrick or Matt and let Rogue be your friend haha.

Posibly low SMT fluid

it's pretty incredible that NO TIMED SERVICE PROCEDURE exists on that fluid.
Even at regulars services, no Toyota mechanics is advised to check the levels. of course, they won't check by themselves since it's hidden under the air box...
yesterday, my car started to act weird (stalling in S mode at a complete stop, grinding when not shifting at synchronized rpm, etc...). of course, no CEL...
it take no degree to understand the clutch is not completly disengaged causing all the trouble. well, that would be simple logic to check the levels of the SMT fluid. not to a Toyota mechanics who doesn't even know there's a fluid involved in the process (I didn't know God and Toyota were so close to make our cars work "just like that").
so, after 1 hour explaining THERE IS a fluid reservoir, THERE IS a level to check, he finally agreed that could be the case. A quick search online (God bless the marketing dummy at Toyota who decided to put internet access in the waiting lounge, I checked from there, the guys was amazed how efficient it is to look at our forums!!!). to make it short, we checked the levels... low. very low. 1cm under minimum at least...
hurray for internet.
f**k, I forgot I was dealing with Toyota. so the reference number the US use for the SMT fluid is not valid here in Europe. at least not in France.
I called Toyota France (what a joke but at least the guy over the phone pretends he knows what he is talking about... and feels well trained when you explain your problem "a MR-S? ok, yes SMT, of course, uh uh, yes, mmmh, it stalls in "S" when at a complete stop, ok, nope, not normal", etc... until he asks the wrong question... "it's a diesel, right?")
