MK3 1ZZ Precat inspection

Post by MR2Jay »

Hey folks,

Is there any easy way to tell if the pre-cat has been removed on a pre-facelift MK3?

Seems a little vague whether this one I'm picking up has had them stripped out of not and I'd really like to make sure

Cheers

Can you get access to look in there (ie : know that you havent got the car yet) : its pretty straight forward to see by peering in the back ........ ill take a piccy of ours (deleted) and MSG it over to you in a bit.

Thanks mate - looking at the pics unless it's been hill-billied, it still has the precats.....

So where is the cheapest place to get the decat manifold? MR2-Ben?

Probably as good as any - there are cheaper on fleabay but I've heard the quality / fit isnt the best and the amount of saving made probably not worth the dice roll ...... Now i've seen Ben's, I will probably replace my skanky looking pipe-tangle with the same when / if go with exhaust upgrade. I only bought the roadster as a runaround and addition for the wife so hadn't got much intention of doing much to it ............ seems like a familiar story eh ?? :laughing

:laughing

Seems we have both been caught in the same trap ;)

OK, I think I'll buy from there. Everywhere else seems to be "Out of Stock", even eBay seems a little dry of them at the moment. I seem to be building quite a shopping list already

It's quite common for people just to gut the precats and refit the empty housing, if you know what I mean

I'll wait until I can tell for certain Jimi but my gut feeling is that they are still there.....

At least I know now that there is an obvious visual cue....I do remember the heatsheild being in place though.

If I budget for a decat manifold early days, then I'm covered :th:

Yep, just gut the OEM one.

Can you remove the o2 sensor and get an endoscope in there? Android compatible USB ones on ebay are about a tenner and are very useful.

That's a really good shout Gaz :th: I'll have to find an endoscope thing. That'll be usefull for all sorts of things :th:

I'm always concerned about gutting cats (that sounds so wrong :laughing) - I'm always concerned I'll get it all out

They work well, some of the apps are a bit wonky though. I've used OTG View on Android, works well enough for me.

If you remove an o2 sensor and shine a tortch in the hole then you’ll see if it’s there or not

Didn't know it was that easy to see through the O2 sensor port. :th:

OK, I'll make that top of the list before any other parts. If it's still complete, they'll be gone ASAP :th:

Yeah it’s simple. I did it for someone at JAE once, took about 10 mins (check that is not remove)
