Inner or outer track rod joints would be my first guess, then from there check the joint where the column goes into the rack.
Assuming you mean rotational play, and not just a loose steering wheel.

The steering universal joint is very prone to corrosion.
Its a good idea to take off the frunk plastic cover and give it a wire brush and grease.
It often shows as notchy steering but worth checking.

Re: PLAY IN STEERING WHEEL MK3
Lower steering UJ replacement.
As already posted, this is a part prone to failing on older cars (mine is a 2002).
Searched on line and found a useful video on replacement, with potential pitfalls mentioned. Was great help but advice on removing/replacing the assembly by loosening lower bolt on upper UJ makes it very difficult to reassemble, lining up is very difficult, especially lying on your back and jammed on the sill! So I removed the upper bolt on the upper UJ, assembled in the workshop and it was a doddle! It can only fit back on one way, so provided you have the clamped steering wheel securely to preserve 'straight ahead', it is really easy.
