Taking the Mk1 round the unbelievable Wrynose and Hardknott!

Post by RickMcRick »

This was one of the main reasons for the trip to the lakes.

If you have never driven Wrynose or even more so, Hardknott, the roads are UNBELIEVABLE. This video does the 30% inclines no justice!!

Sorry for the bumpy camera work, sun in the lense, dirty windscreen and terrible sound quality. I will hopefully get a much better vid of this one day.

First half - Wrynose

Second half - Hardknott

And some still I got out and took before setting off and on the way back, some rubbish, some I'm quite pleased with.

On the start line...

Awesome road. :th:

Mrs leFrog's grandmother had a big house near Whitehaven. Went there at least once every year before she died. Always via the two passes. Not for the faint-hearted when it was icy around Christmas/New Year. Invariably the first to be closed if there was a decent fall of snow.

@Turbo_87 - You will have to come up and visit and we'll get the whole club to come out.

@TLF - We first went up in with my mates Land Rover while it was still icey last year, it was very scary!!

I was back there a few days later driving a Honda Jazz, which is a lovely car for getting round town, but not really suited to those roads LOL.

I intend of getting a better camera and going back soon to get a decent video.

If anyone is interested I'll post up when I'm going :)

Royal Wedding is April 29th

I'm also planning on going to this motor museum.

http://www.lakelandmotormuseum.co.uk/
A diverse and unique collection of some 30,000 exhibits, carefully assembled over a period of almost 50 years, has been painstakingly displayed
I was going to do the motor museum and the passes on the same day and pop up a thread to see if anyone wanted to come while I was going anyway.

You fancy including you lakes in your run? Or do you already have the day planned out?

Haven't made any firm plans as such it was mentioned at one of our local meets that it would be an ideal opportunity to drive the passes and the lakes in general with minimum traffic to get in the way.

I love those roads. Did it in both my scooby and my old rev 2. Would have loved to take my Mx5 through there but I'd have died of tinitus by the time it got from London to the lakes. :(

Must have been great fun in the MK1! Absolutely the car for the job I'd say!

You should try repeating my first run over both passes. I was in an MGB GT with knackered front brakes and a handbrake which wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. Hairy doesn't even come close.

The second time was in my rally spec BDA engined Escort Mexico. I think chalk and cheese about covers it.
