What size spiggot rings?

Post by Bluesmoke »

Trying to eliminate some 70mph wheel wobble. Balancing didn't work so I'm now looking to buy some Spiggot Rings. What size do I need, and are they alloy dependent? Will I have to get the old tape measure out and measure the hole in the wheel?

I do belive they are dependant on the alloy wheel for the outside diameter. But the inside diameter that goes on the hub is 60.1mm (I am 99% sure thats right anyway).

Just make sure they sit flush inside the hub ring, I nearly lost my wheels on a track day after fitting spiggot rings as they were really thick plastic and caused a slight vibration that loosened the wheel nuts.

pretty sure 99% of alloys are like 76mm size
so you just need a spigot that goes from this down to 60.1mm for the mr2.

Are they all just a normal flat face, or are they different depending on make of wheel? Never looked to see if my alloys have rings in them or not so I might have a quick look once the snow starts going. so they have to reduce to 60.1mm diameter?? Where can you normally get them from if they haven't come with the wheels?

Any alloy wheel sales place should sell them.

Also fleabay has 1000+ matches for the search 'spigot rings'.

The last time I bought some (to fit a set of Compomotives on my Ford Ka  in 2003!) I got them from the extremely helpful Jeff Fowkes:

I'm trying to fix a 70mph steering vibration, which balancing failed to sort out.

Spigot rings are my next port of call.

When I changed miy wheels the spiggots were the wrong size and I did not use them to start with. The vibration was there sometimes and not others, worse sometimes than others - this is due to the wheel moving on the hub as it is not centred properly, thats what the spiggot rings do.
If your vibrattion varies as above then it is almost certainly the spiggots that will sort it out, Chris made me some at work out of phospher bronze and never had any vibration again.

Well I have been onto a couple of places, and it seems they do rings to 72mm, but not 76.

Could it be that this is actually the correct size, not 76mm?

You need to take a wheel off and measure the centre bore rather than guessing ;)

I know....

Was just hoping to find a quicker solution as I'm going to be really busy tomorrow plus I need to buy a narrow socket to get to my wheel nuts.

Right, well I finally got round to checking my alloys, and as thought, no rings whatsoever!

Looks like I need some rings to reduce from 79mm to 60.1mm then? Does anyone know of anywhere that keeps spigot rings in stock?
