Refurbing my Enkeis...Help/advice needed??

Post by MRturboTom »

I was lucky enough to find the wheels i wanted for my MR2,
bought them in very good condition.
Originally they were silver
Image
but wanted a contrast with the white, so sprayed them black
Image
changing my MR2 to green turbo, i didn't feel the black cut it anymore
Image
tried gold
Image
tried bronze
Image
and then an anthracite colour, but closest i got was steel grey
Image
Image
still wasn't happy, here with black and bronze
Image

With the influence of chicane and a couple other Emerald Pearl MR2's i have seen i have decided a bright silver is the way forward, so started to refurb the wheels

I am going to polish the spokes, but obviously i can't leave the metal bare
Image
my problem is i don't know how i'm going to tape off the polished lip to either laquer or paint the spokes (i can easily tape off the spoke, but not the other way round),
as its line is on an edge going down into a dip and masking tape i have just seems to lift off

Image

I was thinking of really thin masking tape to try and tape it off.

Can i leave the lip uncoated and just keep metal polishing it? which i was thinking of doing

or shall i just polish the whole wheel and just laquer the whole wheel??

help/ advice and comments all welcome :)

thanks,
Tom :th:

what did you use to strip the old paint? I found nitromors gel to only get so far with stripping alloys.

Nitromors with wire wool, took the several different layers of colour/paint and not so sure if it was powder coat too!
worked really well, took a while to do each wheel though, but got a bit of a routine now lol
