Yokohama AD08 on 17"
Hi all,
I am getting new tires for my mk2 rev3 turbo - main use is as 2nd car during summer only + hopefully 2-3 trackdays (have not done any yet).
Based on various reviews I have decided to go for the AD08 as a sporty compromise. I have 15" and 17" alloys. The 15" seems no good as the widest tire available is 205/50-R15 which probably is on the low side for trackdays or am I wrong?
The 17" are now fitted with 215/40 front and 245/35 rear - the latter is also not available. Which alternative would you recommend for the rear: 245/40 or 235/40?
I would not mind to have the car feel a bit more progressive and believe increasing side height would help - am I correct?
If this is right and the side height is (245/35 - 8,6cm; 235/40 - 9,4 cm; 245/40 - 9,8 cm) which tire would you recommend? I am a bit unsure if the 245 width is a bit on the wide side to begin with...

Re: Yokohama AD08 on 17"
if your wheel width allows then I would go with 245/40/17 rear and keep the 215/40/17 front.
to go with 245 you need minimum 8J wheels on the rear

I already have 245/35 on the rear so the rims are ok - I also think that the 245/40 is the better choice. Their side wall of 9,8cm is closer to the original 225/50 R15 11,25cm.

You don't aim to match the sidewall height of the stock tyre when fitting larger wheels, you aim to match the rolling radius! 245/35/17 is as near to a perfect match as you can get for the radius of the stock 255/50/15. If you want more sidewall height for the handling or comfort then go for it... but "it's closer to stock" is an invalid argument by itself.JeppeFunk wrote:I already have 245/35 on the rear so the rims are ok - I also think that the 245/40 is the better choice. ^^This. Aim to match the rolling radius, not the sidewall height.shinny wrote: You don't aim to match the sidewall height of the stock tyre when fitting larger wheels, you aim to match the rolling radius! 245/35/17 is as near to a perfect match as you can get for the radius of the stock 255/50/15. Re: Yokohama AD08 on 17"
Matching the rolling radius is a good point - and the 245/35 was chosen for that almost 10 years ago when I last drove it as an NA, but it is not so easy to find this size for a quite a few tires and the AD08 does not come in it.
The 245/40 has 3.6% larger circumference vs. the 2.3% of the 235/40. The 245/35 I have on now are 0.45% smaller than the stock 225/50-R15.
I do have another issue though having read the small print in the danish rules:
I can change rolling radius by up to 5% from original and be legal if done on all 4 wheels.
However with ABS I can only legally change 2% between front and rear...
As stock front 195/55 R15 -> 215/40-R17 is 1.4% larger I can only go up to 3.4% larger rear wheel. This effectively means that I have to go for the 235/40-R17 or go for another tire where I can get the 245/35-R17 size. I really want to try the AD08's so that settles it.
As I am used to a NA I do not think I will notice the 2.3% higher gearing on a turbo...

For track days and the road I use Toyo R888's on the stock 15" rims.
You just drive to the track day and race and drive home again on the same tyres.
205/50R15 Fronts and 225/50R15 rears is a good setup with 32psi rears and 30 psi fronts.

Pete are you running 245/40/17 on yours? I'm faced with this dilemma. But unsure if they'll clear the bottom spring platform on the yellow billies with a 35 offset

I've got exactly that R888 setup for track and they rock, albeit on 15x7J+35 Enkei RP01s
However, talking about AD08s, I'm refurbing some 16" split rims to put 205/45/16 and 225/45/16 AD08Rs on. Nigh on perfect sizes and at a snip over £100 a corner fitted, very reasonably priced
