Camber adjustment

Post by BenMr2Essex »

Hi,

Just a passing thought really...

But will be getting 4 wheel alignment done soon so am just getting prices from places.

One place done free measurement and £10 adjustments for toe but what really got me was the £50 to do rear camber?!

Why on earth is it more expensive? Is there that much more to adjust? I thought it was one adjustment on either side?!

Ben

You need to take all the weight off, wheel off, adjus, refit, put gauges on and re read.
Effects toe massively.
But to adjust the toe, it's gauges on and tweek the rods, simple.

possible to set your own camber (with bolts and/or adjustable topmounts) and let the garage do the toe?

or will camber always need tweaking professionally?

My rears have camber already but by looking at rear from a slight distance I'd say too way, prob way to much..

But toe is out front and rear. Not so much the front.

Is there anyway to measure the chamber myself?

Chamber is done via the cusco suspension, so not sure if there would be indicators or something?

Camber gauge, but the car needs to be on a 100% level surface or else it'll be all messed up.

Cheers Tom. Been doing some research with the help of Stu and think we found something that looks like it can calibrate its self to the floor level? Maybe, maybe not. But we shall see soon

I just put a spirit level on the engine lid to find somewhere flat.
Measure the camber on the wheel, then take wheel off and measure camber on the disc. Work out the adjustment required, adjust and recheck with wheel on.

cool
yeh was gona say soon as you jack the car up taking the wheel of youll change the angle.
but as you say if you know both results, you can apply the adjustment to the disc.

something like this do the trick?

Have a look at 'clinometer' on the App Store. I do believe you can calibrate it to the floor angle first... Which makes life easier lol

That's what I use and the alignment printout I get after I get all the toe done shows its spot on

Not having coilovers I may be missing something but it seems the camber adjustment on Ben's car is by the top plates. I appreciate that on some cars it's via the bottom of the strut though, possibly with crash bolts.

If adjustment is just by the top plate I assume the wheel doesn't need removing?

i would have to guess so, tom knows more about these things than i.
you would still require a way to measure your wheel camber though. as the notches/lines on the topmount probably dont mean a great deal, more a visual reference but no actual numbers.

i have adjustable topmounts AND camber bolts!
though looks like all my camber has been achieved through the bolt, not the topmount.

why, i couldnt tell you? anyone?

hence ive joined the fold as i like to learn new things. and if camber adjustment is as expensive to do at a garage as ben says, and requires people messing with my wheels, if i can do the work myself i will.

Yep, I'm keen to understand it a bit more too.

I have the Trackace gauge which seems pretty repeatable for toe measurements. We've also experimented with the string/axle stand method of setting the thrust angle and checking rear toe. Proper race car stylee. I'm looking to see how close we got when I get the alignment checked next week on a Hunter system.
