Non staggered wheels

Post by Suds95 »

Hi guys :)
Been looking recently for some new alloys for my 2.
Looking at places like gumtree, the majority of the alloys are the same width front and rear.
I was just wondering if there was anything can be done to allow use of non staggered rims? Or is it just a big no-no?

Thanks guys!

It won't handle well, but you can do it. Normally you'd fit different width tyres front / rear then extended wheel nuts and a 3-5mm spacer on the rear.

I've had two turbos with non- staggered 17s on. Swapping to staggered wheels on the same tyres was a really good move. Made the handling much more confidence inspiring.

In summary.. Not recommended, but not unsafe as long as you do it as above. Don 't ever fit the spacers without the extended studs though!

Thanks for the in depth reply!

From what you say I might just hold off and save up to get the proper wheel set-up :)

Just gotta find a nice set of wheels now! Hahaha

Thanks again

If you're looking for a set of second hand wheels then keep a look out on the other mr2 forum (not sure if I am allowed to say the name on here) as a lot of wheels go up for sale on there and because they are normally off mr2's you should be able to find a staggered set very easily (depending on your wheel taste)

I will say it for you IMOC

same size wheels are OK but you will need to space the rears out by 10mm and that helps keep the wheels and tyres in line ahead. I had 15mm spacers on mine before getting a set of staggered wheels and it handled pretty good.
You still need to stagger the tyres even with same width wheels - keep min 20mm wider on rear, 30mm is optimum. 215 mm front and 235 rear is a good set up
Staggered wheels and staggered tyres are best though

No idea if they are still available. Amazed if they are due to their rarity.
I don't recall ever seeing another set with the right offsets for an MR2.
Mind you, 3 piece wheels aren't everyone's cup of tea.

The other place to look is Driftworks.

Front ET might be a possible issue (I run ET33 without any problems).

I've contacted the guy about the wheels at the imoc link above. He is not responding at all. Very annoying :/

You're not the only one on here by the look of it.
I've just noticed he's only a quick blat down the road from me.

O/T - are you still going to the Grasshopper on 31st? If so, PM me.

Hi guys regarding the sterns i have for sale, i wanted to get tyres fitted and checked out before i sell them. Being split rims and not being used for 2 + years. Money is not really an issue as in i dont need to sell just a waste sotting doing nothing.
I dont get much time off hence why i still not sold. Plenty of offers maybe i should update the thread until its fitted and tested. Will probably advertise here once there checked over etc.

Same size wheels and tyres front and back are just fine, all depends what you like. I have tried many but I have had the same front and back for years and some people on here will be able to confirm my car handles very well.

Best get your offer in quickly before Tony adds them to the collection :p

I've seen the Stern Schmeide come up in MR2 suitable sizes a few times, this design seems to be much less common. I am tempted myself...
