Tyre choice ?

Post by MRHAPPY62 »

Hi Guys I have a choice ! Ive recently bought a set of 17" wheels with tyres all are 7j . I had a brand new pair of 205/40/17 toyo proxes in my shed so they have replaced the rubbish that was on there before. Now do i stick with the Goodyear 225/50/17 that are on the other 2 wheels ? Or get the Continental Contisport3's 235/45/17 that are already on my old rims changed over ? Both options have good tread but i am looking to get 4 wheel alignment done before Japfest this weekend :confused1: Will the 225/50's work as that is the cheapest option ? And running out of time

You don't mention what offset the 17s are. The 50 profile on the rears may well cause arch rubbing issues. Your speedo will under read quite a lot as well so you'll need to bear this in mind around Gatsos etc.

I have assumed the same ET as stock wheels for this:

If the actual number is lower the more likely you are to have issues.
Personally I would swap out with the 45s.
If you're not living life on the edge, you're taking up too much room!

I run 225/50 with a 16" wheel and that's already bigger than stock. 50 profile on a 17" would be even worse.

I'd go 235/45 out of your options. 40 profile would be nearer stock size on a 17.

Thanks Stu I am happy with the Conti's just thought I could wait to change when the Goodyears were worn out , Got fed up looking through the wheel and tyre threads to see if 225/50/17 would be ok !

Tell me about it. I spent ages searching for tyre info. Decided to go with Rainsport3 in the end but had to go up a profile to 50 due to availability for 16's.

At least tyre choice on a 17 is better.

Conti's will be much better for handling. Could always try and sell the Goodyears.

This is handy if you haven't seen it: http://mr2.gordaen.com/wt_calc.php
