Wheel vibration
Advice Please - MR2 REV 5 - I am getting vibration 70mph upwards all the way to the top speed. To try to rectify the issue I have fitted the following -
new wheels, tyres, spigot rings, balanced by 2 companies, bottom ball joints, top mounts, track rod ends, polybushed track control arms, polybushed anti-roll bar, droplinks, discs (there is no vibration when braking). However 70mph onwards it persists. The steering does feel a little vague/flighty, could it be a fault with the steering rack/column?

Re: Wheel vibration
Seems like you have covered most of the usual culprets, H ave you tried jacking up the front of the car and given the wheel a wiggle to see if there is any play?

Re: Wheel vibration
If they are aftermarket wheels what bolts are you using to hold them on?
They need to be either tapered or not depending on wheels. If you have the wrong set on you could get vibration.

Re: Wheel vibration
Over 60 mph vibration are usually not wheel balance related.
If the wheels and tyres are in shape then I'd be looking elsewhere.
Simple fix would be to not go over 70
I'd be looking at the steering rack and column

Re: Wheel vibration
I'd take a run out gauge to:
Hub faces
Brake discs
Wheel rims
Do both front and rear.
Also check driveshafts, steering damper (in the frunk), steering rack mounts, steering rack Universal Joints between the steering wheel and the rack.
Check what the geo settings cover. Castor may be an issue, but sometimes isn't checked or corrected.
Measure up the suspension components (arms, ride height, wheel centre to wheel centre etc) to make sure the car looks square and sits right.
If you're anywhere near North London feel free to PM me and I'll take a look over it. I lived with similar issue for years with my previous car (the white one in my sig). Never fixed it, despite ££££ spent. I may not be able to find the fault with yours, but I can probably tell you what looks right and what needs more investigation.

Re: Wheel vibration
Nowhere have you mentioned that you have serviced the brake calipers. A sticking piston or sliders would be the most likely.

+1 not sure about most likely, but certainly a prime candidatebaileydom wrote:Nowhere have you mentioned that you have serviced the brake calipers. A sticking piston or sliders would be the most likely.

Re: Wheel vibration
Rev 5 front tyre speed flaps might help, deflecting the airflow as tyres tramping the air ?

Re: Wheel vibration
That won't be the solution here. If it was, then all Rev1-Rev4 cars would exhibit the same problem.cosmos wrote:Rev 5 front tyre speed flaps might help, deflecting the airflow as tyres tramping the air ?

Re: Wheel vibration
Have you adjusted the rack preload yet? And the other possibility is the wheel bearings - even if they dont 'feel' like theyve gone in the usual way or are noisy

Wheel vibration
I had very similar symptoms to you.
+1 Wheel bearings checked? Mine were very rough so I replaced them which helped. Well I cheated and fitted replacement good front hubs as it was easier but make sure yours are freely moving once discs are off.
Also check your alignment. With mine now set to around 0 degrees 10 minutes front and rear total toe-in the floaty/vague feeling is massively reduced.
