Alloy wheel fitment and tyres help please

Post by oddshoes »

Hi All

I am looking at another set of alloy for my v6 and knowing that they are wide and I will more than like require arch extensions I am not to worried but need help with the spacers that I might need to run and tyre fitment, so your help is appericated

specs of the wheels are

17x9j+45 currently running 225/45
17x10j+48 currently running 275/40

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191707186694? ... EBIDX%3AIT

I am currently running standard suspension and have a pair of 25mm spacers to feel the arch on the rear with my 8j. I do have another set of alloys (Rays TRD Sports T3 - which need refurbishment) that I might put on if it wont work with the Volks

Many thanks

Dave

Dave 9js dont go on the front, I have 8J Et32 and they are just about in line with arch with about 5mm space between rim and BC strut.

my rears are 9j Et35 and they fit nice - again IMO
you would need a widebody kit on it to pull those off IMO

Cheers Pete its more the clearance on the suspension is my main concern as I guessed I would need hub centeric spacers but thinking of bolt on arches like carben fibre does or maybe ab flug kit

I think the 225/45 may hit the strut base.
Will also require a 20-25mm spacer

Rear seems to be pretty flush to be fair.
I'm sure you can find some U.S. Mr2s running that on the rear to see for yourself?

Thanks guys, looks good then as I have a set of 25mm spacers on the rear at the moment so could put them on the front instead its very tempting to get these. If the rears are going to sit flush then I wonder if its worth trying to flare the front arches then in stead of arch extensions

I can't see the fronts working without silly camber or arch extensions tbh.

Those wheels are available in much more MR2 friendly fitments, if you're not in a hurry why not wait for a more suitable set to come up?

So far this thread has only covered suspension/wheel arch clearance. There is a lot more to it than that. For starters, 25mm spacers on the front will markedly alter the scrub radius. On top of that, the camber angle when the suspension is compressed will change as well. If the stock suspension does not have a sufficient range of adjustment to compensate then the result can be less than optimal.

Suspension setup/geometry/wheels & tyres need to be considered as a complete package. Once you start fiddling with one element in isolation it can have knock-on effects elsewhere. That is why it is crucial to establish what effect a proposed modification will have on other elements of the OEM spec.

It's all to easy to be seduced by looks to the detriment of performance.
