17 Tyre Pressures

Post by Woody928 »

Evening All,

Based on your experience what tyre pressures are people running on the following setup? and also what do you use the car for with those tyre pressures. I've added 3 separate categories for different uses as I imagine people will change depending on their use. In particular I'm keen to know so that I can have suitable air pressure in the tyres for Silverstone on Sunday.

General Driving
215/40/17 -
245/40/17 -

Fast Road
215/40/17 -
245/40/17 -

Track
215/40/17 -
245/40/17 -

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :th:

29/33 road

Bump up 1 psi each per category after Road. So I've been told.

General Driving
215/40/17 - 30
245/40/17 - 32

Fast Road
215/40/17 - 29 ish
245/40/17 - 30 ish

Track
215/40/17 - 23- 26
245/40/17 - 23- 26

Track depends on heat on the day but you should expect pressures to increase by roughly 3-5psi per tyre. Also depends on circuit/ number of corners vs straights/ general speed and direction of the circuit and the compound of the tyre (ss/s/m/h) but tend to bleed N/S tyres 1-2 psi lower than O/S

e.g brands with AD08r's - start with circa 26psi... do a few warm up laps and then a few hot laps. Hot pressure usually nsf30 osf29 nsr32 osr30-31... would then bleed to 29psi all round so cold starting pressure will be nsf25 osf26 nsr 24 osr25

But to be honest that's for a full day with multiple sessions and OPL. for just a couple of sessions on a reasonably fast circuit like Silverstone on a not too hot day I'll probably set them cold to 26all round N/s and 27 all round O/S

:confused1: For General/Fast Road, on what basis are you quoting a lower pressure for the rear 245s compared with the front 215s?

The recommended figures are dependent on several factors one of which is the vehicle weight and its front/rear bias. The stock MR2 pressures have a 4psi difference (6psi on 14" wheels) - http://www.mr2oc.co.uk/know-your-2-know ... bartid=263 *

* Btw, the Owners Handbook which I have for T2 (originally a stock Rev5 UK n/a) quotes 30/34psi rather than 29/33psi.

Altering the specific pressures is one thing but I would maintain the front/rear differential for road use. Manufacturers don't arrive at their specifications in an arbitrary manner.

On track is another matter. Not only are you likely to be pushing the envelope far more than you ever will (or should!) on the road but you might want to experiment in order to affect the way the car handles.

Just got to get T2 ready for tomorrow, then visit the jetwash as it's more grey than Cosmos Blue atm!

See you at Beaconsfield for breakfast. :)

Still waiting to hear from jimGTS and shinny, so for now it's just me/you/Woody928/gavsdavs.

Vinny is bringing one, not sure if anyone has an inflator though. He seems to be bringing half of his unit though lol

I'll be bringing my tyre inflator which has a digital display. It plugs into the lighter socket.

Inflator, power pack/jump cables (track time can take it out of the battery) tool kit, bleeder/gauge and spare fluids all packed. Anyone is more than welcome to them if needed. Just missing the toe rope as that's broken.

Now to find somewhere to leave it whilst on track!
