New tyres

Post by notroubleclubber »

After having a slight mishap on a roundabout I checked my rear tyres to find I have cheapos.

I'm booked in for a few track sessions next week so want to upgrade the rear rubber. The fronts are Yoko's so are fine.

The size I need is 225 45 16.

I've got around £100 to spend. I've found some good secondhand toyo t1rs for £60 but I'd have to pay fitting on top. It seems I could get these for around £75 each new.

Ive also heard rainsports are a good choice.

The car is not normally used in the wet but I have been caught out a few times and a mix of road and track use.

What do you guys recommend and where from please?

The toyo and certainly the rainsports will over heat after 5-10 minutes on track and wheel feel like you're driving on ice
For the rear go for yokohama ad08s if you want road and track

I'm not sure Avons will be brilliant on track either. Btw AFAIK Avon doesn't make a Z3 tyre. They will be either ZV3s or ZZ3s.

Then you have to also factor in the price of getting your car fixed when you go into a wall at the track.

Track and cheap rubber and a car that isn't fully sorted mechanically just don't go together, its just going to end in tears. With 15inch or 16inch wheels your going to be struggling for all the traction you can get.

Ad08's are going to be in another league grip wise.

Buy the correct tyres for what the car will be used for.
If it's a daily buy tyres that are good in the wet.
If it's mainly a track toy get track based tyres.
Do not try and buy cheap tyres. I have experienced the consequences of buying cheap tyres and it cost me a car.
Remember that is the only part of your car that is actually in contact with the road.
If you can't afford tyres for a track day I would be thinking twice about going on the track.

Agree completely with the above. Cheap and good do not go together with tyres. Good and good value can do, but not cheap. My car doesnt see the track so I'm not entirely qualified to comment there and some of the other replies have you covered. But if your car is a daily used in all weather conditions then i can highly recommend rainsport 3s. I also have run Maxxis MAZ1's all round on the v6 and they are ok. Wouldnt put either of them on a track though, few laps on an open pit day maybe - so they have time to cool but nothing serious. Pkus the ad08s etc will monster them in terms of outright dry grip.

I do the odd track session only...i don't use it as a daily but as a weekend toy.

If I upped the spend to £100 a tyre would that get me a decent tyre?
