Tyre recommendations please

Post by gavsdavs »

Looking to source a full set of tyres, would like to hear what people like/don't like, etc.

Wheels are 17s, 8 and 9 inch.

Personal preference for sizes is
205/45/R17
245/35/R17 (or 245/40R17 for more choices)

Candidates are currently
- AD08Rs
- Michelin Pilot Sport 3s/4s
- Bridgestone RE050s
- Continental Sport contact 5s
- Goodyear Eagle F1s

Any I might have missed ?

Bit of a no contest there if you have the money. AD08R.

Personally I run Toyo R888's but you don't have the weather for them over there, you need to back off in really wet conditions.

RE050 are a factory tire but are pretty hard. Bridgestone make better tyres in the RE002 and RE003 type of line like the adrenaline range.

Good suggestions so far - I do drive this car all year round and i don't fancy grip falling off a cliff in cold or wet conditions.... Keep em coming

Had the Ad08r on before and didn't find them that amazing for all weather driving.

F1's used to be the only road tyre I'd buy but they changed the design, not bad.

Got the v12 evo 2 on the current wheels and they are really good. Not slipping in the wet and do really well when hitting triple figures down the B roads. Wasn't expecting anything special from them but they have been great performers. Done 7k on them and given them death (road use) with still loads of life left and more than enough grip. Very surprised.

Uniroyal Rainsport 3's on the V6. Epic in the wet.

215/40/17 and 245/40/17 on 8s and 9s.

Hankooks also a good tyre in this size but I just happen to like the uniroyals - personal preference

+1 for the Rainsport 3.

Good in the wet, bit not a performance tyre in the dry. A good daily driver tyre and super cheap.

Goodyear Eagle F1's (18/225 on the Spazda - love 'em) and Hankook EVO V12's on the MR2 are current favourites now the demise of the 16's performance tyres are onset (although I do like my T1R's still). Not got any 17's on the MR2 - yet ;)

T2 has 17s and doesn't go into hibernation from October to March. :)
I use Eagle F1s specifically for their wet weather performance.

215/40/17 GSD3* on 8J front.
245/40/17** Assymetric 2 on 9J rear.

Any summer tyre will perform less well when the outside temperature drops below 7°C
Even more so when they dip to 0°and below. Being in the south east though I can live with it.
In parts of the north of England or much of Scotland it would be an entirely different matter

*Until now I have had to fit these as Goodyear don't make Assymetrics in that size/spec..
The good news is that this size is included in the new Assymetric 3 range (as well as 245/40/17).
The flip side is that I won't need to replace any of mine for some time (barring any unforeseen damage).

** alternatively 235/40/17 which has a more rounded shoulder if arch clearance is marginal.
If you're not living life on the edge, you're taking up too much room!

Uniroyal Rainsport 3 tyres on mine in 215/40/17 & 245/40/17. Great in the wet and dry. Maybe a softer compound but I don't do many miles anyway. Very good tyre for the money (Camskill).

Had them on the car from the last MOT in December, they were not very good in the poor weather. In the dry they were fine. Didn't rate them and will never recommend them, well not to someone I like.

After using many other tyres it was a surprise that people raved about the T1r, utterly nothing to wright home about and not up to hard use from a powerful turbo car. In my opinion.

Jumped at changing them just 2.5 months later. Much happier now and lots more control and grip.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I used to swear by Bridgestone S02s, now replaced by S02a, which doesn't look very impressive.

Still have a few weeks before I need them - the next question will about about suppliers in the south east :)

Definitely Michelins,
Excellent wet and dry, f1s are a bit unnerving at speed in comparison.
Best tyres I've ever had on the mr2, excellent all rounder.
Notice the grip and better turn in over the uniroyal and hankooks which are more under steering due to less turn in grip.

Ad08s are excellent when hot, and bit scary cold.
Even on a Kent run they don't get hot enough to get sticky, for road use only I'd avoid
