Standard rear tyres
Where's the best for standard 225/50/15 rear tyres?
I've tried black circles and metres but both only have t1r's and some expensive Michelin then r888's.
Can you still get falkens?

Re: Standard rear tyres
The Michelins aren't suitable for an MR2, they are a classic competition tyre.
Any Falkens you find will be old stock.
T1R's are pretty much your only option in stock sizes, and who knows how long they'll be available for considering how old the T1R design is now.
Camskill do list a Pirelli P Zero at ~£200 each. Not sure if they are a current tyre or old stock clearance.
Even the range in mainland Asia specials is pretty limited now.
Long term I'd look for some 16's or 17's.

Re: Standard rear tyres
Ahh yeah, forgot about the LM's!
LM's or 11R's, that's a tough choice. 11R's are very nice, and I think they are a bit lighter than LM's?

Re: Standard rear tyres
Not fussed about the weight tbh lol I think the Lm's with chromed polished rims and either red, orange or blue centres or the 11r's in matt black or poss the bronze with blue detail.

Re: Standard rear tyres
Get off your ass and stick the LM's on!
Not sure what stockies will use once 225/50/15's do disappear..?
Pretty sure it's the size of a Lambo Countach front... Though I don't suppose those boys are too fussed at paying £200+ for each tyre

Re: Standard rear tyres
I guess they'll have to either suffer the crap budget tyres, or move to 205/55R15 for the rear - the overall diameter is pretty much the same as 225/50R15.

Re: Standard rear tyres
Think I'd rather change wheel size than have a 205 on the back lol

Re: Standard rear tyres
Its interesting to read this as I'm about to get some proxo's for the NA and relaised today there's not really any choice without going for track rubber. There's a few people in the Datsun community who use 225/50/15's though as well with quite a few JDM wheels, and I'm panning on finding something in that size in the not too distant future.
I can't believe that the tyre size will just disappear, there's got to be enough people around to justify productions surely?! I mean there's loads of 60's classics using obscure tyre sizes and they still can get a hold of tyres...

Re: Standard rear tyres
They will if there's not enough demand to justify producing them, or enough demand to develop a new tyre in that specific size.Woody928 wrote: I can't believe that the tyre size will just disappear, there's got to be enough people around to justify productions surely?! There's a company that specialises in Classic tyres called Longstone Tyres - The Michelin TB series for example comes in an imperial equivalent size to a 225/50R15. Wouldn't be much good on an MR2 though. Conversely modern tyres often aren't very good on classics as modern sidewalls are so much stiffer etc.

Re: Standard rear tyres
There's got to be quite a few old performance cars running 15's still though I would have thought? no...
Useful to know, hadn't realised there was such a stark difference in tyre compounds though. I suppose if money is no issue anything is possible though, its just got to make it financially worth someone's time. Surely with the likes of toyo given all of the design and r&d has already been done it continues to make sense to keep do small production runs, especially considering the lack of competition in the sector. I suppose only time will tell ultimately...

Re: Standard rear tyres
You'd like to think so. There should be enough demand worldwide to keep at least one of the range, T1R rather than the proxies - if Toyo were made aware maybe they'd do a run now and then.Woody928 wrote:There's got to be quite a few old performance cars running 15's still though I would have thought? no...

Maybe we should start some sort of petition across each and every mr2 forum (and find out what other cars use the same tyres) and ask Mr Toyo-san to help keep our cars original.

Re: Standard rear tyres
Also the R888's are used in this size by a number of track cars in particular the Porsche. I don't think the Toyo R888's will cease production any time soon, its always hell to try and get any of them over here from January to February as the distributor sells out of them with all the summer racing over here. Got a new set of 225/50R15 for the rear and they are NZ$340 each over here so not that expensive in my opinion, basically they drive like your on 18inch tyres.d-peg wrote:Get off your ass and stick the LM's on!
