Wheels 14 inch

Post by nick »

I do some sprinting and hillclimbing in my Rev 3. Does OK but would like to lower the gearing.

One solution would be to fit 14 inch wheels. Does anyone know if these will clear the brake callipers? Are there any there issues?

As above.
You could just fit lower profile tyres which would achieve the same thing.

Thanks,

Anyone know of lower profile 15 in tyre? Or would consider larger wheel if necessary.

15" are hard to source in right tyre size, best just play with a tyre website and see what they got
had quick look on blackcircles as example
not found anything with lower circumference

Still looking to fit lower profile tyres.

Has anyone fitted any 14 inch wheels to a Rev 3 car?

14" Wheels won't fit over the calipers......

Only way to do this is to fit the smaller Revision 1 calipers and discs to the car. Not worth the trade off IMHO

Asking your question again won't change the answer :laughing

I've never heard of someone downgrading the brakes to fit 14" wheels

Shall I presume you're running sticky tyres already? If not, that would surely net you more time than a minor change to the "gear ratio" achieved by running a smaller rolling radius. According to Toyo, the R888 is produced in 225/45/15 which might suit your needs very well, being both sticky and a 4% reduction in rolling radius.

I run in Classic Marques and currently use standard T1R's which are OK. Using a list B or C tyre ( like R888 ) involves a significant time handicap Which I doubt I would get back. At places like Loton or Curborough the gearing is too tall and I would like to reduce it. Best current option I can see is to go to 16 in wheels and get 205 on the front and 225/40/16 at the back again T1R's. With a wider wheel and lower sidewall grip should be a bit better with about 4% lower gearing.

Open to ideas!

215/45/15 T1Rs giving a 5.5% difference...

Appreciate the thought, but means going down on the width of the tyre

The rev2 on calipers will fit on rev1 carriers on rev1 discs. I only know this as as one of my mr2s arrived with this set up which did somewhat puzzle me when I looked at it.

TBH you could downgrade just the rear brakes and run 14"s just on the back. It would look odd, but would maintain the majority of the braking performance, albeit while throwing the balance forwards.

You've got a compromise to make somewhere. To reduce the rolling radius you're going to have to reduce braking capacity to fit 14" wheels, reduce tyre width to 215 or pay for 16" wheels. The choice is yours...

I hear what you are saying. I am in no hurry, but a set of 16's looks the most likely solution.
