Best tires and offset setup for fitment and handling?

Post by jackcycling »

Hi All,

Looking at getting some alloys. I'm making modifications with the intent of putting a 1MZ-FE V6 in it further down the line with a TRD supercharger (should be making around the 270hp mark).

Obviously I'll need some fatter tires on the back to accommodate the new power without sliding all over the place. I love good fitment as well. Don't mind doing some bashing and rolling the arches.

So what are everybody's width and offset recommendations for 15 inch alloys & big power? :th:

Currently I've got in mind to have 235s on the back and 215s on the front with a +35 offset all around.

know your 2 is your friend.

my V6 has 17" Sparco Crimson NS2s
8" ET 32 with 215/40/17 front
9" ET35 with 245/40/17 rear

15" tyre choice has diminished over the years, 16" is going the same way

Beautiful MR2 by the way Pete. What made you choose the 3VZ-FE over the 1MZ-FE?

thanks
back in 2009 1mz was at least £2k more than a 3vz.
3vz was ready and waiting at Rogue motorsport. simple really

Still running the stock 15 inch rims on mine with light modifications to the 3SGTE but its all about the quality of the rubber and not so much the tyre widths.

15's are definitely a compromise over 17's or 18's but for one the bigger sizes are not just "Bolt on" direct fit and the rolling diameter changes, plus I wanted to keep a totally stock appearing car.

The other big issue with 15's now is the horrible tyre choice available, however Toyo is still making road as as well as road legal race rubber for them.

Nice setup, how much are the AD08R's tyres ? I notice the price of the Toyo R888's that I use have gone through the roof over here, probably because they have less and less competition in this size. Rears re 225/50R15 and fronts are 205/50R15 but in all likelihood I would go back to the 195/55R15 fronts next time.

Last time I looked at the price of AD08R's in 225/45R18 they were off the planet.

AD08RS are not that expensive here in those sizes, averages out at about £100 each for a set. Fronts typically a little under £100, rears a little over.

Main reason for the high price of the stock size 15 rears is the production volumes are very low as very few cars use this size.

My supercharged V6 mk1 is running 16x7 et20 fronts with 205/45/16 tyres and 16x8 et30 rears with 225/45/16 tyres. I'm using Yokohama ad08rs, they provide more than enough grip to keep me facing the right way.

Btw I think you'll struggle to get 270hp using the TRD supercharger as the intake temps get too high but you might manage it with a water meth kit
