I have recently brought a 84 mk1 1.6 and after the first few weeks of driving something has gone wrong when I brake or change down the car cuts off! also I found it does this when I'm waiting for the car to reach temp then the choke comes off it slowly stalls

Sounds low to me. Mine is just over 2k cold and 1k warm. I understand my 1k is high though.

Sounds very much like an AAV problem. This thread covers pretty much the same problem http://www.mr2oc.co.uk/forums/40/156452.html? Try following the first couple of fault finding steps I suggested in that thread and report back.

Re: CUTS OFF WHEN AUTO CHOKE COMES OFF
What happens to the idle rpm if you switch on the rear demister (with the engine up to temp) ?
Try adjusting the warm idle screw. It's located on the throttle body under a round black plastic cover, you can see it in this picture just to the right of the red vacuum line on top of the throttle body.
With the engine running adjust the screw and see if the idle will increase. If it does bring it up to over 1000 rpm then put the demister off (make sure you have no other heavy electrical loads on (ie heater blower, lights, wipers etc) and see what happens.[/quote]
