engine stalls after 4 seconds
Hi, just got a barn find MK1 mr2 t top. last on the road in 2001 and last started and run 2009.
I've done the usual replace battery, fresh petrol, new plugs and ht lead but when I turn the key it starts revs to just over 2000 rpm then dies all in the space of 3 - 5 seconds. If I try to start it again straight after it dies it does the same.
You can hear the fuel pump run for a second or so after it dies and if I undo the pipe to the stray bar I have pressure.
I have noticed that the alternator has seized.
The engine management light goes out as you would expect on starting, also noticed that if I press the accelerator and try to start it it does not start.
Any help would be welcome.

Alternator now free, battery light goes out when engine starts but still stops after a couple of seconds.

Yes. When shorting the 2 terminals on the diagnostic plug the engine management light flashes once the off for a couple of seconds then flashes once again. I understand that that means every thing is ok.

I have also check the resistance on the injectors and they are all the same.
It seems like it is firing up from the cold start injector, does anybody know how to tell if the normal injectors are getting a signal.
I don't have the top to the fuse box by the battery so unsure which relay does what, I know all fuses are ok.

Downloadable copies of the Owners Manual (identifies the relays), BGB, 4A-GE engine manual and Electrical diagrams are available here https://www.mr2oc.co.uk/download-cats/c ... 0-mk1.html
If it always cuts out after the same time interval (around 4 secs) then I'd be suspicious of the the COR (Circuit Opening Relay) that can cut the fuel pump off after that kind of time if it isn't being held closed or is faulty.

Re: engine stalls after 4 seconds
I have replaced the cor relay new from Toyota same day. Very impressed.
Replaced the coil wired the fuel pump directly to the battery and still not running.
Took the p!ugs out and they dry as now not starting at all.
I've put a multimeter onto the injector connector and when cranking found no voltage or current.
I've checked all the fuses in the engine bag and all o.k.
Any other advise would be good.

Re: engine stalls after 4 seconds
do you mean the fuel pump isn't running or the engine isn't? Have you checked that with the fuel pump running your getting fuel at the fuel rail?

Re: engine stalls after 4 seconds
crack the fuel union off somewhere and see if fuel is coming out as the plugs are dry. Id do this with 12v directly there so you can prove the pump. If no fuel comes out with 12v directly at the pump then pump needs replacing.

Re: engine stalls after 4 seconds
I've connected the fuel pump directly to 12v from the battery and the end that goes to the spray bar into an empty petrol can it pumped nearly a quarter of a gallon of petrol in about 10 seconds so i know the pump is good. I'm going to see if the throttle sensor and air flow sensors are giving an output next.

Re: engine stalls after 4 seconds
There isn't an airflow sensor on a UK MK1, they use a MAP sensor which won't stop the fuel pump running
