Best way to remove caliper pistons?

Post by Jellysenpai »

My front brakes are starting to stick and after freeing them up they seem to drag a bit after a few brakes so I decided to buy rebuild kits with new pistons and give that a go. The problem I ran into is only 1 piston per front caliper wants to come out, does anyone have any tips to get them both out so I can replace all the seals and pistons?

Thank you

Should have pushed them out when still on the car with brake pedel.
however you can set up a pump using foot pump with brake fluid/ or compressed air.. just be careful they dont fly out.

Pop the other piston back in just enough to seal it in the bore and put a socket or a piece of wood between the tip and the caliper so it can't come out again. Now use a bicycle pump in the hole for the brake hose. If that isn't strong enough take it to a petrol station and use a tyre inflator.

KEEP YOUR FINGERS CLEAR OF THE STUCK PISTON BECAUSE WHEN IT POPS IT FLYS OUT.

Once 1 starts coming out you need to clamp that one in so all the force goes to the second one

They come out real quick with compressed air.

Undo the caliper bleeder and connect a hose to that and into the end of you air gun.

Make sure the piston is not pointing at you or anything thats going to break.

This works for the fronts only, the rears need to be unwound with a brake tool you can buy that fits to your 3/8" ratchet wrench.

Sadly I don't have an air gun so it's gonna have to be a tyre pump or just using the brake pedal.

Pushing the pistons out with them still attached does seem to be the easiest, I just needed to free them up by pushing them in first. Thank you
